HAPPY EARTH DAY MONTH!
AND HAPPY EASTER AND HAPPY PASSOVER!

Did you know that when we opened in 2004, we were the first pet supply store in the nation to base its mission on environmental sustainability? April is usually an important month for us, as we love to celebrate Earth Day. (Fun Fact, when this newer location was first certified "Gold" by the City of Portland's Sustainability At Work Program, we had the highest marks of any retailer in all of Portland!)
In honor of our favorite day of the year, we like to offer you a sale!

We’re having to be a little creative when it comes to this sale due to some well-earned staff vacations, so we’ve landed on this plan:

- PICK YOUR DAY:Each of you gets to use the sale price ONE TIME during the month of April (on the honor system, please).

-When you come in for your discount shopping, you can take 15% off of all regularly priced items that aren’t food!("Food" = a balanced meal that you might put in a bowl and serve for breakfast. Treats etc are still on sale.)

-Better yet: if you bring us gently-used pet supplies that we can donate to rescues (or if you purchase something with a value of $10 or more to donate while you’re here), you can feel free to increase your shopping discount to 20%

What sorts of items can you donate? For cats: crates and food are often most needed (canned and dry foods, partial bags of dry food are OK.) Unused medications can also be donated. Very few cat rescues can accept used toys and beds for cats. *New* toys, beds, treats, and scratchers would be welcome for cats.
For dogs:
crates of any size are incredibly useful, as are clean stainless bowls, food, clean gently-used toys, unopened treats, clean beds and blankets in good condition, and clean undamaged flat collars, leashes, Gentle Leaders and harnesses and unused pet medications for dogs.

These sales are a great time to stock up on things you know you'll use such as supplements, treats, toys, chews, or to pick up that new leash and collar set you've had your eyes on.  The discount also applies for items we can special order for you during the sale, like a big cat tree.

This is not a Secret Sale, but you DO have to tell the cashier that you'd like to take your discount.

If you arrive with items to donate, we'll take them off your hands and give you a 20% off voucher to give to your cashier during checkout.

CUTEST EVER EASTER COOKIES!

We've had a long relationship with the local woman that makes these fabulous homemade organic, wheat free cookies that we sell at the counter. Our favorite part is that when she frosts cookies, she only uses natural colors derived from foods and flowers. Reds are from  beets, greens are spirulina, yellows are turmeric, carrots make orange, and to make a lovely blue she steeps edible flowers to extract their color. Lately though, she's stepped up her game with her decorations. Look at these gorgeous bunnies, Easter eggs, and there are little three-packs for small dogs with rabbits, carrots, and eggs. These will go fast!
Green Tip: Not only is organic farming good for the environment, organically grown foods can actually be nutritionally better for you (and your pets) than their traditionally grown counterparts. Read more here

WILD COAST RAW FOOD!

We’re SO excited to bring in Wild Coast raw foods for cats and dogs! This gorgeous locally made food (They're in Olympia WA.) is so exciting.
Some of you cat folks might remember the wonderful brand called Rad Cat, that had created a recipe that was so gentle, so digestible, bone-free, and so good for cats with compromised digestion, as well as being low phosphorus for the kitties that have kidney issues. This ingredient list is so amazingly similar! The food is incredible looking, and Walter kitten says it’s really delicious. (It’s designed for adult maintenance, but we’ve been adding a bit of extra fat like a small amount of kefir, some raw egg, and often feeding the higher fat duck). This food looks so fresh! The color is amazing.

I’m also thrilled to say that we also have Wild Coast Raw Food for dogs, in easy to feed patty form in Beef, Duck, and Turkey. Check out this little video of their kitchen

Safety is their #1 priority at Wild Coast! There are many steps they take in their kitchen to ensure their employees and food remain in tip-top shape every day.

Their meats are sourced from Free-Range & Grass-Fed family owned farms, and they are antibiotic and hormone free, human grade, USDA inspected, and always kept at safe temperatures.

They do not use HPP (yay!) and instead they use a Lactic Acid wash to ensure the nutrients in their ingredients stay intact and unaltered while still receiving an appropriate bacterial "kill step" to keep their foods safe for you & your pets.

T
heir produce is 100% organically grown, and all of their raw food formulas for cats and dogs are AAFCO approved. All recipes were created by a veterinarian with over 25 years experience (and who happens to be the owner’s mother! It’s a real family operation.)

Green Tips:
1) Buying from Local businesses like wild coast means that products don’t travel very far, saving fossil fuels.

2) Choosing meats that are Grass Fed helps to: conserve soil, increasing carbon sequestration and preserving biodiversity and wildlife (Johnson 2002, FAO 2009, Pelletier 2010).
This also reduces fertilizer and pesticide runoff into waterways, and the use of compost, cover-cropping and rotational grazing helps build healthy, productive and water-conserving soils. Organic methods also enhance pest and weed resistance without the use of chemicals and ultimately foster greater resiliency in the face of extreme weather and climate change.

SEASONAL CUTENESS!

We have a variety of very cute toys right now! Don't miss out on the refillable catnip carrots from The Spoiled Cat, and their funny catnip fried eggs!
FREEDOM HARNESSES!

The Freedom No-Pull Harness features a patented control loop on the back of the harness which tightens gently around your dog’s chest to discourage pulling behavior and makes walking your dog an easy, more enjoyable experience for both of you. It also features a structural connection ring on the front of the harness. Connecting to this ring is optional, but recommended, as it allows you to attach to the front and back of the harness simultaneously. Used this way, you are able to control pulling and redirect your dog’s attention back to you for training and treats.

This new EarthStyle collection combines colorful upbeat designs with earth-friendly webbing made using recycled plastic bottles! This color popping design was originally inspired by gorgeous Guatemalan textile designs.

Green Tip! Buying products made with recycled materials helps to support the cause of keeping plastics out of the landfill
WHAT CAN YOU DO THIS EARTH DAY MONTH?

1) A fun and kid-friendly activity is to create a flower garden specifically catering to pollinators like bees and especially the endangered Monarch butterfly.
The 2022 monarch butterfly season launched with heartwarming news: the western population, which migrates along the California coast and numbered about 2,000 butterflies in 2020, jumped to almost 250,000 butterflies in 2021!! Most monarch scientists and monarch butterfly followers were stunned.
Ask your local nursery for the species of milkweed that Monarchs rely on to survive, and for the varieties of colorful flowers that attract other butterflies and native bees. This would be a fun project for kids to research and then help to plant and maintain. Good tips here

2) Watch this animated special for kids called "Here We Are":  Take a tour of the planet we call home. Adapted from the best-selling children’s book by Oliver Jeffers and narrated by Meryl Streep on youtube Here

3)Watch “Our planet, One planet” : Experience our planet's natural beauty and examine how climate change impacts all living creatures in this ambitious documentary of spectacular scope, with David Attenborugh on You Tube here

4) Look on Next Door for Recycling Events (one is listed below in Neighborhood News)
