MORE GOULISH BODY PARTS: POULTRY NECKS!

Some of the very best teeth cleaners are chicken necks, duck necks and turkey necks (suiting 3 sizes of pet). It’s very true that COOKED poultry bones are very dangerous to dogs, as they can be sharp and splintery. Raw necks are different. The bones in the neck are small and crunchy and surrounded in connective tissue and cartilage. They’re safe to chew through and very supportive nutritionally. Our favorite holistic vet recommends three raw poultry parts a week in place of commercial joint supplements, due to the high levels of natural glucosamine and chondroitin and other joint supporting nutrients in the collagen and connective tissues of bone in a highly bio-available state.. As they eat them, their teeth and gums are also getting a great flossing! The enzymes in the raw meat also help to fight bacteria in the mouth. Dogs love them, and many cats love chicken necks too (either whole, which is often a young cat’s game, or in 1/2 inch slices) . This was our cat Otis’ favorite treat! Check out the video in this blog post and turn on the sound! CRUNCH CRUNCH!  Please Note: if you're after chicken necks, you might have to look for them at New Seasons in the meat dept. as our vendors have recently discontinued them. I've gotten them there in the past by asking the butcher. I cut them up into 1/2" pieces, freeze them on a tray, put them in a ziplock  and thaw them as I need them in a little bowl of water.
Necks have another nice benefit for dogs with anal gland issues – several chicken necks a week can make nice firm stools that help to express the anal glands more effectively.

Most dogs and cats eat necks, chewing it as they go, but I could conceive of a situation where a dog might gulp a whole neck and choke, but I’ve never heard of it. Remember that dogs and cats are designed to eat something like a bird squirrel or mouse as well as shearing meat from even larger bones. It’s very enriching for them to work away at it and enjoy it. I also think that a neck would be pretty digestible if they did swallow a larger piece. Dogs and cats are also designed to bring up a piece of meat that’s too big and re-chew it to give it another go. (Gross, but an efficient and natural behavior. Walter does it with his freeze dried chicken hearts) Try to choose the appropriate size for your dog and like anything new, supervise them as they eat them. You could hold larger necks while they gnaw the other end, but watch out for your fingers which are also made of meat and small bones. You can cut them smaller if you want to introduce them more slowly for digestive reasons. We also have crispy crunchy Freeze Dried necks of several sizes which might be smarter and easier for older animals.

ALTERNATIVE  CHEWS FOR CATS AND SMALL DOGS!
Most cats and small dogs have fewer options when it comes to keeping their teeth and gums healthy, especially things that can scrub the back teeth. We mentioned the freeze dried chicken necks above, but our two other favorites for these pets are:
-Freeze dried chicken hearts, (We carry both Small Batch and Stella and Chewy's freeze dried hearts). They're a great size as cats need to use their back teeth to bite into them, and their teeth are scrubbed as they do it, kind of like those prescription T/D things that scrape the teeth but have ingredients we would certainly not recommend feeding as meals)
- Ocean fish chews from Honest Kitchen.. They all can be gnawed on, are very digestible and sustainably sourced, and can also be cut with a knife or a pair of kitchen shears if you'd like to make them a more manageable size. Holding onto the fish chews while your pet is learning to eat these is easy if you'd like to monitor or just to help them negotiate it.

A PUP ABOVE COOKED FOOD FOR DOGS!
We're happy to be carrying this new lightly cooked food! We were sad that Nature's Logic discontinued their frozen lightly cooked food, but we're very happy to tell you why we like this one very much! Most traditional ‘fresh dog food’ has been cooked over high heat. When that happens, the food’s weight shrinks by about 25%, losing a lot of vitamins, nutrients, and protein. Their secret sauce is the power of the sous-vide cooking method, cooking foods slowly and evenly to retain all that wholesome goodness. They use 100% human grade, hormone-free, antibiotic free, and non GMO ingredients, and they test every batch for pathogens. To be certified as human grade, a pet food must make its food in a USDA inspected human food facility and source only 100% human grade ingredients.
Their recipes contain bone broth, which enhances hydration, is super tasty for picky pups, supports healthy joints, enhances skin and coat health, promotes gut health, and helps fight inflammation. The broths are made with the same proteins as the food itself.
On average,  this brand has 50% More Protein than the rest of the  of the "Fresh/lightly cooked food" category.

About sustainability, They say, "Impact starts with how we operate. That means taking into account ethics during every phase of a product’s lifecycle, from packaging design and ingredient sourcing to how our product is sold. We’re into recycled packaging, upcycling where we can, and sourcing from farmers with strict animal welfare standards". Their fulfillment center runs on 100% renewable energy. Each year, they donate 1% of their revenue to the White Buffalo Land Trust to help fund their flagship farm, which is a living, breathing example of regenerative agriculture and a resource for farmers and ranchers from all over the region. Regenerative farming aims to capture carbon from the atmosphere and to restore the health of our soil and water.Yay!
"Lightly Cooked" Foods are excellent for picky dogs, and far easier than homemade diets which may or may not be properly balanced. They're also good for a whole food add-on to a heavily processed  dry kibble diet. Try some today!!
PS: we carry the 3# bags in our freezers, but we can also order 7# and 20# boxes for you.
