GREEN DOG TURNS 18!
Wish We could party!

Stupid Covid ruins almost everything, doesn't it? I'm personally very sad that it's been so long since we could host an anniversary party! I miss the giant cake and crowded store full of regulars helping us celebrate!

What I especially want to celebrate right now is our truly amazing staff. Many of you know that Mike's had some difficult health issues, and having our rock- solid managers and staff has saved us, allowing me to do a lot of my work from home.
Check out just a few of these recent reviews:

*Wonderful, compassionate staff, and a plethora of goods for your furry friends"
*Outstanding staff here is a resource for everything we ever need for our pup!"
* "Best pet supply place around, the staff is awesome!"
* "I stopped by with my mother to buy calming treats for my dog, who just moved from a not-so-dog friendly town on the east coast to a very dog friendly Portland and is a bit overwhelmed. All the ladies there were incredibly knowledgeable with tips on how to help train and adjust my dog. They were all incredibly kind towards my mother & I and my dog, and will most definitely be getting our business in the near future. Highly, highly recommend for any dog or cat owners in the area!"
Mike and I are psyched to have found yet another wonderful employee. Please welcome Emma when you're in. She's comes to us from a lab that does analyses on a variety of products, including things like CBD and even pet food. She's clever, upbeat, and is picking up and retaining information like a champ. She has a dog called Wednesday!
Want to give us an Anniversary Present??
We can't have a party, so we decided instead to throw our enthusiasm towards doing something good for animals in Portland, and we need your help! The staff put their heads together to figure out a way to raise money for a variety of causes, and we decided this: We have some really fantastic metal water bottles - they're pretty sharp looking if I do say so myself. (pictured at the top of the newsletter). Better yet, they are:
  • Made of 100% Recycled American Aluminum
  • Single wall aluminum ensures a super lightweight bottle
  • "Our 24 oz. flagship bottle is American-made from start to finish with 100% recyclable, US sourced aluminum, so you can make a difference with every sip.”
  • The company is Liberty, out of WA
  • Melissa especially loves hers because “It is the only water bottle that doesn’t make her water have a metal taste.
We will be donating 50% of the proceeds from the sale of each bottle. We really hope to sell 2 per day!
We hope to support  one organization each month until our bottles are gone. We're kicking it off by supporting the good work of The Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon this month. (These bottles come with a free FCC sticker as well)
Hopefully you made it to this year's catio tour  - if you didn't, you certainly can check out the virtual tour here. You can also check out my article on our blog to see  some catios, both fancy ones and simple ones.
The Catio Tour is part of Portland Audubon’s and the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon’s Cats Safe at Home™ outreach and education campaign. This effort seeks to reduce the number of cats living outdoors in the Portland metropolitan area in a humane and environmentally responsible manner. Both organizations believe every cat deserves a safe home where they are loved, cared for, and kept free from hazards. The Catio Tour was created to offer inspiration for those looking for ways for their cats to have safe outdoor time.

CYCLE DOG TRAVEL WATER BOWLS!

Hot days demand water preparedness! These great water bowls are right up our alley. They're made right in downtown Portland from upcycled bicycle inner tubes (they have saved millions of tubes through the years from becoming landfill waste by making cool products like these). They're leak-proof, and they fold flat and compact. There's also a carry loop for attaching to leashes, bags, etc. and like all of their products, they're guaranteed.

FISH JIGGLES!

Doesn't that sound delicious? Maybe not, but this amazing supplement packs some big benefits!
Fish Jiggles Ingredients: Fish Gelatin, Herring, Cod Liver, Mango.
"Our fish is sustainably sourced from the cold, clean waters of the northern Atlantic. Our Cod Liver is made in-house and lab tested for Vitamin A and Vitamin D

Gelatin is healing to the digestive tract, connective tissues and organs. Our gelatin is thick with natural collagen and elastin. Gelatin also improves the absorption and utilization of proteins. Using our sustainably sourced gelatin can improve the skin, coat, joint, nail and gut health of your pet.

One hundred grams of gelatin contains 85g of protein and is high in glycine (stimulates protein synthesis, inhibits oxidative stress, improves sleep, mood and lowers blood pressure), proline (improves metabolism, protein synthesis and structure, and wound healing), lysine (reduces symptoms of herpes, improves immune health and muscle strength) and other amino acids. Gelatin is highly satiating and can help your pet feel more full.
The addition of Cod liver and herring provide additional Omega-3, Vitamin D and Vitamin E. The addition of mango provides a natural source of Vitamin C which improves your pets utilization of the healing benefits of gelatin.

These Jiggles are also low-calorie. You can add them into the diet of overweight or sensitive pets without further contributing to metabolic or digestive disorders.
PS: Jiggles also comes in Pork! ("Our pork is sourced exclusively from regenerative, humane farms. Our pigs live as happy little farm hippos! It is also tasteless, so is easy to feed to your pickiest pets")

About the brand:
Solutions seeks to improve the impact of the pet industry at every single stage, from the microbiota of the animals and the earth, to the ingredient animals, to the employees at the processing facilities, to the environments downstream, and the health of the pets and pet owners themselves. They have leaned heavily on a combination of traditional and modern science to determine the Goldilocks point where they know that old-fashioned methods improve and strengthen the planet, health and community rather than harm it.

SOLUTIONS BRAND GOAT NOG!

You probably know by now that Green Dog loves raw goat milk!
Raw Milk is easy to absorb. It contains vitamins, minerals, important amino acids that are often missing in dry heat-treated kibbles, tons of digestive enzymes, protein, and a plethora of nutrients that support even the most immature and damaged digestive systems. This formula also contains Duck eggs which provide additional choline, folate and amino acids. They also added honey which is antibacterial and is an excellent source of energy. A bit of Cinnamon assists in insulin/glucose regulation.
This new product can add important nutrients to your pet's regular diet. We love rotation in a pet's diet, regularly trying out small amounts of new things and rotating between them and your other favorites to take advantage of their varied benefits and nutrients!
Not often, but every once in a while we hear of a cat or dog that is sensitive to fermentation, (our Otis the cat and Maggie's dog Morty have both shown us this sensitivity) so this product may be easier for animals like these to tolerate. We don't want them to miss out on these sorts of unique products and we're glad to have these Solutions goat milk products to give them the same benefits that our other raw goat's milk provides, plus some other nifty ingredients that aren't in the Answers goat milk.

Goat Nog Ingredients: Raw Goat Milk, Duck Eggs, Honey, Organic Cinnamon

"Our milk, eggs and honey are sourced exclusively from regenerative farms where the goats are allowed outdoor or indoor access as they choose. They consume a natural diet of grasses and wildflowers… and lots of sun! Our cinnamon is organic and certified earth Kosher, to prevent the destruction of the soil biome which helps sustain the earth."

LIVER /KIDNEY CLEAN!

We love Four Leaf Rovers products, and this new formula really sounds fantastic. "Liver/Kidney Clean" is a veterinary formulated blend of organic mushrooms plus foods and herbs that support and maintain normal liver and kidney function.
We love that they contain medicinal mushrooms, as medicinal mushrooms have a variety of other powers. Among MANY other benefits, medicinal mushrooms are amazing for supporting the immune system and for shrinking growths. We’ve seen amazing results!(read more in my article about mushrooms here).
This new product is
like spring cleaning for your dog's most important organs.

Every day, dogs are exposed to toxins in their food, water and environment. This toxic "waste" includes lead and heavy metals, glyphosate (routinely used in Portland parks) and other pesticides, as well as fluoride, PCBs, plastics and other common chemicals.

The liver and kidneys break these toxins down and help exit them from the body. But, over time, they can be impacted by the toxins and start to decline. This puts not just the liver and kidneys at risk, but all of your dog's organs.
This formula contains a nice list of ingredients that help to detoxify and support healthy liver and kidney function. Read about them here

How often you give Liver/Kidney Clean depends on your dog’s diet and lifestyle. For dogs living in the city or for those eating processed foods like dry kibbles, they recommend a quarterly cleanse.

One user said, "Great product. My little dog had high liver values. A month after adding this product to her food, she had liver test redone. Liver numbers have gone down.. wow!!"
Another echoed this review saying, "My Miniature Pinscher Bart has pancreas issues. He also has had high liver enzymes since June of 22. His blood work yesterday came back and his liver enzymes were normal! I was very happy to hear."

As many of you know, I like to remind people that when starting any new supplement or food, start with a pinch and work up to the recommended dosage. This will help you avoid digestive surprises if your dog has a previously unknown sensitivity to an ingredient in the formula.

SIMPLE & FUN CAT ENRICHMENT TOYS YOU CAN MAKE AT HOME!

Housecats sometimes get the short end of the stick when it comes to Environmental Enrichment. It's important to create ways for indoor cats to exercise (both interactively with you and in solo play or exploration). I was a zookeeper in Atlanta, and we keepers were always trying to create novel ways to entertain our captive friends, both keeping them active and engaging their minds. I created browse gardens of nontoxic trees and bamboo, etc that keepers could cut from regularly. We would freeze treats in big blocks for gorillas on hot days, we'd provide novel bedding materials, created complicated arial routes in tall exhibits for primates, provided live fish for otters, feeder puzzles for orangutans, etc. and plenty of other species- specific experiences throughout the zoo. I love to take these sorts of ideas and apply them to bored indoor pets.

When Walter Kitten is bored, he becomes a monster of devastation , clearing shelves once covered in framed photos (with glass shards raining down) and other keepsakes, making me want to strangle his little fluffy neck. ((lefthand photo = "What? I had to clear a space!") But I do know better, and when he gets his jerky monster on, I realize it's because he's trapped in this house and needs more exercise. Not only do we take him out for walks on his harness, we also try to turn things around the house into playtime. We had a big pile of paper that had come in shipping boxes, which at first was really fun to jump in and chase wand toys that we dragged through the pile. We had taken a box and cut a variety of shapes in the sides (some just big enough for his arm, and some big enough for him to squeeze through), which was also super fun for wand play for a number of days. We just stuffed all of his now boring paper into his now fairly boring box and sprinkled little treats throughout the crumpled paper. He dove into the box and was essentially upside down, rooting through the many papers to sniff out and find the treats, and he's been at it today for close to 20 minutes, which is what inspired me to tell you about it, as it has been a very successful way to encourage his solo play!
Cats can also learn the same sort of tricks dogs can! One activity that helps to engage the brains of cats and dogs and also helps to teach them about how to learn is target training. In this article,I talked about how we used target training in the zoo, and later in the article there's a link to a neat video of the first time that Otis the cat learned how to target. It led to a variety of other fun tricks he learned!
Walter learned a big variety of tricks as a kitten, and he loves to work for treats, learning new tricks easily that people assume only dogs can do (sit, lie down, wait, turn around, turn the other direction, sit in a specific spot so he won't be underfoot while we're cooking, etc). If you didn't read the article linked above about catios, please check it out here, as it also talks about how we made Otis a happy indoor cat after he had been an indoor/outdoor guy for 10 years before we adopted him.
Running, jumping, playing in paper bags, learning tricks, etc are all good for both mental and physical health. Get that chubby lazy cat up and running by being creative with simple things like different packing materials. Think about tricks you've taught other pets, and see if you can use those same treat luring methods you might have used before on your cat!
My favorite cat training treats are the Feline Natural Freeze dried nuggets. With added moisture they can be served as a meal, but I use them as training treats. Very high value, easy to break. They're also super when picky cats need an extra topper sprinkled over the food to encourage them to eat, and they're my favorite for when I want to use a CBD tincture - just drip it on these treats and they absorb it right away. They  also break up easily into smaller bits, perfect for the box full of paper!
