Subject: Happy (Belated) New Year

Happy Belated New Year!

This newsletter is a bit late, as this month we hit a big bump in the road. Three of us tested positive. I haven’t been sick with even a cold for more than 10 years, but even double-masked, working almost the whole time in the back room, I got it. This Omicron is no joke, y’all. This mess kept me home for 2 weeks!

We were so sorry to have to shut the doors for 5 days so everyone had time to test, which wasn’t easy as there was such a shortage of tests in stores and no appointments available anywhere in Portland that week. We were so sorry to have to surprise you with a sudden interruption of business.

We’re doing everything we can to stay safe, so on top of our many regular safety policies, it’s also a bit chilly with the doors wide open, and a little loud near the registers with our air filters running. What we ask of you is to try and keep your visits short for now, and to watch your distance when it comes to us and other customers. We’re so happy to be open again, and we hope you stay safe through this stupid surge, in this third stupid year of this stupid pandemic. To help us recoup from our losses and to thank you for your support, I’ve tried to pick some good newsletter specials for you!
SOME FUN PERSONAL NEWS: MEET WALTER!

Many of you know we lost our beloved Otis (in the first photo) at the beginning of the pandemic, and we have missed him so very much. Mike has been through some big surgeries lately without the greatest results, and we decided that when you’ve been through something big, that it might be helpful to have a new fluffy cutie-pie to shower with love and affection and to make us smile a hundred times a day. This 8-week old baby is a new experience for us. Otis walked through the back door of the store and into our lives at 9 years old, already with a perfect personality. This little fluffy 2lb maniac didn’t know a darned thing about the world, or even how to get off of furniture or climb stairs. He’s silly, and also very very sweet. We’ve brought him up to the store twice, once when it was empty, and he investigated every single inch of it, then came home and slept more than 3 hours. We brought him back the next day for an hour, so that he could meet a few employees and start to be socialized to more people. He’s once again taking a marathon nap as I type this. New stuff is very tiring!
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU THAT DONATED FOOD TO THE PONGO FUND FOOD DRIVE

Thank you to everyone that donated a bag of food to the Pongo Fund during our annual dog food drive. Thanks to you, and with a "sell-6-get-one" match from First Mate Pet Food, we were able to donate 825lbs of food (33 big bags!) to this wonderful organization. They provide food and a mobile medical care unit (staffed with veterinary volunteers) for those that can’t afford it, keeping so many dogs and cats out of the shelters and with the people they love.

They wrote us this sweet note:
"Green Dog has raised thousands of pounds of food for The Pongo Fund these past few years thanks to their Christmas Pet Food Drive. Even during a pandemic, the Pet Food Drive continued, because hungry and hurting animals don’t stop for pandemics. And once again, people stepped up to help. This moment now is to once again say thank you to everyone at Green Dog Pet Supply. They are a Portland institution that has always blazed a trail for finding the best of everything for the animals, because they care about your pets the same way they care about their own. The truth is, I think their goal in life is simply to help others. And they do it beautifully.
Thank you Green Dog Pet Supply, for making the world a better place.

Here’s the director's holiday message  It really describes their amazing work and the challenges they face. Please check it out!
SAFETY AWARENESS FOR PETS DURING WINTER STORMS

We started the month with some winter weather, which made me want to share some info with you about ice melting products. It's not even February, so we still might get some more snow or ice, and I wanted to remind you that when you’re walking your dog during these events, remember that people do put down toxic salt products on sidewalks and roads. Our landlord certainly does. Even “pet safe” ice melters can cause irritation to the feet and certainly shouldn’t be licked off. Read more about that here. The primary takeaway is that it’s important to rinse and dry their feet if you can to prevent them from ingesting toxins, and to protect their feet from salt burns. To be prepared, you might want to pick up a Mudbuster. Snow and ice is usually a relative surprise to us when it hits, and only then might you realize that you still haven’t bought a decent snow shovel or windshield scraper. If you do have those things, you might not use them frequently, but when you need them, they’re right there.
The Mudbuster is an amazing tool for cleaning dog feet, and very valuable to have in your cupboard when you need it. Fill it with warm water, insert foot, and rotate it a bit to let the soft little scrubbers do their work. When you’re done, you can just open it up and rinse off the scrubber part, even sticking it in the dishwasher to get it clean. Employees that have used it have commented that it was far easier, more effective, and better accepted than trying to get in between the pads with a towel. Bring it along when you head out onto the trails. When you’re ready to go home, the dog can jump right into the back seat without dragging mud into your car. Mudbusters come in 3 sizes.

TRAIL BLAZING TAILS LEASHES NOW HAS A LITTLE DOG LEASH!

Trail Blazing Tails leashes and long lines are our absolute favorite! Made right down the road, these leashes are incredibly practical. They are made with “Biothane”, a durable rubbery material that feels like broken-in leather. It has a sliding attachment and high quality brass hardware that allows you to have a regular leash handle, or to wear it around your waist, or over your shoulder, crossbody. You can even hang your treat pouch in a convenient spot (see photo). You can adjust the leash to be shorter or longer, or use it as a dual control (one clip on the collar, one clip on the harness), you can also hold it in the middle to walk two dogs at once, or you can tether a dog to your chair leg while you sip your latte.

Your little dog deserves luxury just like the big dogs! Indulge in their premium, buttery-soft material (in a narrower lighter size), which is odor-proof, waterproof, strong, and ultra-lightweight! They build them with solid brass hardware and heart. This smaller, yet still highly durable leash comes in 1/2 inch width and is suitable for dogs up to 30 lbs. If you want to choose other color combos than what you see in the store, you can certainly go to their website and look at your options (our prices are the same as on the website).
You can also order a small dog long line in any length (even with an adjustable attachment for crossbody, etc) if you’re working on your recall or wanting to give a dog space at the beach but still on a leash. Drag these grippy leashes through the mud and salt water and rinse them right off. You can’t do that with leather! These are really built to last.

P.L.A.Y. TOYS!

We love P.L.A.Y. Toys, because they’re always funny. From cacti to flamingos, and hamburgers to pizza slices, every new toy from P.L.A.Y. is a riot.

We especially love this company because they are B-corp certified. What this means is that they’ve had to go to great efforts to prove that they build environmental sustainability and strong ethics into each level of their business. B-Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. We love to support B-corp companies like P.L.A.Y and West Paw, and we’re impressed that Grand Central Bakery across the street achieved B Corp status last year.

These funny African animal stuffies have goofy big bellies. Better yet, to help to protect animals, 2% of the purchase price will be donated to the international fund for Animal Welfare.

THE RIPPLE RUG!
HANDS DOWN, THE BEST KITTEN TOY.
(Click the first two  links for Cuteness!)

Anyone have a kitten? They need playtime all the time, interspersed with big naps. Getting them to that big nap is the challenge! This genius product will play with your kitten for you! The bottom layer is made of an indoor/outdoor type rug that has a rubber backing. The top layer is a thinner piece of this carpet. It has holes of a variety of sizes, and the back of it has tabs of velcro that allow you to construct hills, valleys and tunnels. Hide lots of little toys inside and they'll be surprised with what they find while they're investigating the tunnels, and reaching through the small holes to find the "mice". Interactive play on the Ripple Rug with a wand is also an excellent game, as jumping and leaping is fun when you can land on your back on a soft carpet hill. The Ripple rug is an excellent scratching surface as well, and even big cats like Otis liked to scratch it (and take naps in the valleys). The amazing thing was that for all of his scratching on it, it never showed a single sign of wear.
The company is proud to say that the Ripple Rug is designed, manufactured, packaged and fulfilled  here in the USA. The carpet is made with recycled plastic bottles. To date they've recycled over 3 million bottles, which means they're not floating i the ocean or piling up in a landfill. It's non toxic, colorfast, and doesn't promote the growth of mold or mildew. Here are some tips for shaping the Ripple Rug

Our hearts have been heavy since the tragic traffic incident that occurred at our crosswalk right before Christmas. We at Green Dog want to express our sympathies to the family and friends of the victims, though we have yet been able to find out who those people are. We do want to thank our employees for their amazing efforts to help the victims in the dark and the rain, at their own peril. (If you have questions about this event, please ask Christine, as our employees should not have to relive their own trauma from the event).
We immediately contacted the Beaumont Business Association that evening to encourage them to help us to approach the city to request a button that can be pushed to stop the traffic for crossing, as it’s become a very dangerous cross walk in recent years with fast moving traffic, combined with heavy foot traffic of people headed to the businesses on that block . They responded right away, and said they would be working together with the BWNA for a solution.
We’ve had other smaller but frightening incidents with minor injuries to people (and a dog), and we witness and experience near-misses very regularly. The BBA will be working together with the BWNA, and we at Green Dog and Blackbird (and I’m sure many other businesses on the street) are offering to help in any way we can. We’re grateful for the big digital sign erected near the crosswalk, but it is proving that signage isn’t enough, as cars are still zipping right by at high speeds. We believe we need that button that stops traffic for pedestrians. Please ask the BWNA or the Beaumont Business Association to ask them how to best support the idea of the city installing a crosswalk that stops traffic for pedestrians, and how to slow traffic along all of Fremont St for the safety of the neighborhood.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND FOR GIVING US A GREAT CHRISTMAS SEASON!
(
Kosmo agrees, and he would like to remind you that Gift Certificates make wonderful presents for others throughout the year!)
