Subject: Happy Summer!

STAY COOL!
Summertime tips!

Fremont Fest was a success! We were proud to donate our tent space to two great organizations: Force free Oregon, who work hard to help safeguard our communities' pets from aversive and unethical treatment by educating animal care professionals to follow modern understanding of behavioral science and use only positive reinforcement training methods in order to foster a belief that every animal including our pets should have the basic rights to live without unnecessary fear and pain.
and Underdogs Rock! Rescue, who rescue dogs from overcrowded high-kill shelters (in Southern California, Alabama and other locations) and transport them to dog-loving Portland, Oregon. We've donated some good piles of food and other essential items generously donated by our customers to the small organization in Alabama, as they have zero facilities such as a humane society or even a "Pound". Their volunteers do the best to foster strays and support them until they can be transferred to places that can find them homes.

We also donated a gift basket for raffle that was worth $150 for the Friends of Wilshire Park (as we did last year as well) to help them install a drinking fountain for dogs. They wrote to us saying: "
Dogs and their hoomans come from all over the city to the Wilshire dog park and many shop at Green Dog! It’s hot – especially during this crazy heatwave but dogs need water all the time. The only water available is if someone brings a gallon from their home. We want to do better. We want to add a water fountain. Can you help us reach our goal?" That goal is a shocking 22K to bring a piped-in water source to the dog park!

Friends of Wilshire Park are motivated  to do this because "According to an article by Jan Riesenthe on AKC.net, “lack of water intake can cause dehydration, which can occur if a dog doesn’t have proper access to water.” In the most serious cases of canine dehydration, the severe shortage of fluids can even lead to kidney and other organ failure and to death. “The best way to protect your dog from dehydration is to make sure he doesn’t get in that condition in the first place: provide him with a constant supply of clean, clear water at all times, including when you take him outside.” As humans committed to the wellbeing of animals, we understand the importance of keeping dogs hydrated". Stay in touch with this project here. This just in: that gift bag raised $800!

WE LOVE RUFF WEAR LIFE JACKETS!!

Customer Pam sent this great photo of Zeke in his new Ruff Wear float coat. She said,”Here is a pic of Zeke wearing his Ruffwear PFD on Dorena Lake just south of Eugene. He does not like harnesses at all, but had no problem with this one. Definitely worth the purchase!”

We agree. they're durable, lightweight, and comfortable life jackets for dogs. They're designed for the pups that love to make a splash and join their humans while paddling, swimming, and exploring on water. Come in for a fitting!

COOLING GEAR!

Our shelves are stocked with other great summer gear from Ruff Wear! One of our favorite products throughout the years has been the swamp coolers. These clever cooling jackets can be soaked in water, keeping a pup's core temperature lower on hot days. Many a customer have reported great results when attending outdoor activities with their dogs on hot days. Reaching  under the jacket, you can really feel the difference in temperature. Bring your water bottle and refresh the jacket by drizzling water right on it if you're out long enough to have evaporated the water.  Their new design is a bit more streamlined than the old ones (FYI - the old versions are on sale!). Ruff Wear has also introduced a new product: the Cooling Neck gator! Check out these handy tools help to keep your pup from overheating on these hot days.

SHEDDING MUCH? TRY THE ZOOM GROOM!

Hot weather often makes dogs and cats shed extra hair. One of our favorite products for brushing out loose hair is the Zoom Groom, which comes in cat and dog versions. We like it because it really does do a great job of removing loose hair.  So many animals really like the way the flexible rubber prongs feel, and it doesn't seem to cause discomfort like many metal combs. (You can see that Walter loves the feel of it). It's especially good at removing fuzzy, floofy undercoat hair, but also does a great job on a Labrador's coat. (When I use it on coats like a lab's, it sort of moves a pile of hair towards the tail,  which you can just pull off with your hand (it doesn't gather it up in the fingers, like it does with fine fluff). For loosening short-coated loose hair, do it in the yard. They're great for dogs getting a bath, helping to work in the soap and get it all out again while you rinse.

FROZEN TREATS TO THE RESCUE!

Help your Pets chill out on a hot day by using lick mats! Enrichment lick mats are the hottest new enrichment toy and for good reason. Smear the mat with soft, spreadable food and serve - or freeze it first for even longer engagement. Licking releases relaxing hormones, helping calm and ease anxiety. The effort and focus to get the food out of the grooves also serve to distract from a stressful situations or boredom. Saliva production aids digestion and promotes tooth and gum health. Plus it takes a while to get at all the treats, making for a long-lasting, occupying treat. If your dogs don't love bath time, spread some peanut butter into the surface of the Whale or Ducky mat and stick it on the side of the tub, giving your dog an enrichment distraction while taking a bath! These mats feature suction cups on the back making it ideal for sticking it to the tub, or the refrigerator, or to smooth tile floors. (Also a great distractor for nail trims). Kitties that love Churro soft tube treats, bone broths or cow's milk kefir might also enjoy a good lick session too. We have loads of lick mats with a variety of designs/textures. This is not a chew toy. Supervise your pet while using this enrichment mat.

TWO EXCITING NEW GREEN JUJU FERMENTED VEGETABLE BLENDS FOR DOGS AND CATS!
Adding small amounts of fermented whole foods is an effective way to provide vitamins, minerals, enzymes and Probiotics! In our opinion, whole food toppers are especially important  for animals that only eat dry kibbles.
1) Lua's Golden Paste
Golden Paste features organic turmeric and coconut oil, wild fermented as a whole food source of anti-inflammatory plant compounds. Great inflammation support through potent antioxidants for all dogs, especially those Senior pups that need a boost
2)Bam's Beets:
made with organic red beets and purple cabbage fermented as a whole food source of probiotics, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes and more. One of the things that makes Bam's Beets unique is that it is wild fermented, which means your pet is getting a more diverse and unique range of probiotics in every bite. Note: Beets are also great at firming loose stool)

We're so excited to carry these products, made by this incredible local company! Check out their other amazing toppers, like their fish jiggles broth and Goat Nog!
PS: Any of these Green Juju products would make a good frozen treat on a lick mat!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do like to occasionally remind people that when introducing new foods and supplements, it's always a good rule of thumb to start with a very small amount  and see how it goes, as opposed to jumping right in to the highest portion suggested for their weight. It should be just fine for most, but every once in a while we hear and an animal has run into some sort of digestive surprise or allergy/sensitivity, usually when the dosage amount given is on the high end for a product they've never encountered before.  A little might be better than a lot at first of any new thing you try.
