I SEE SUNSHINE!
and lots of baby crows!

I'll personally be happy to see a bit less rain for a while. It will be more fun to watch and photograph the new crow babies that are being raised by a resident pair that calls my yard home. I'm hoping people driving through the neighborhoods are careful, as people assume that crows will just fly away, but the youngsters are uncoordinated and vulnerable this time of year and sometimes end up in the road. Baby crows are pretty easy to find as they beg so loudly when mom or dad brings food and stuffs it into their squawking faces, and they're generally hilarious.

Anyway, the real news  is that July 4th is coming up fast - please check out the Blog Post that is linked below to navigate this tricky holiday and avoid or at least lessen noise sensitivities (especially if you have a new puppy or kitten in your home)

We hope you'll join us for the fun obstacle course event on the 25th (more info below!)
JULY 4th IS AROUND THE CORNER! BE PREPARED!

In June, we like to remind you that July 4th will be upon us very soon. Many pet owners have trouble every year with frightened pets on this holiday, and this year might be even harder as it falls on a Monday, potentially making it a long weekend of noise. We want to encourage you to start now to prepare properly. Here's how:

1)Youtube is your friend when it comes to helping pets adjust to the sights and sounds of the fireworks, especially young puppies and kittens who haven't experienced it yet. We're playing Youtube videos of fireworks on the TV for Walter kitty with the sound almost all the way down, and we give treats when he sees one that he finds a little disconcerting. As he gets better with the mildly alarming visuals, we're turning up the volume just a tad and rewarding him for hanging out. He's big on treats, and we hope it will help. We're starting now, as we'd really like him to be ho-hum about the noises by the time they're real, and we're seeing good progress.

2) We already have a big table full of calming treats and tinctures set out for you. Each year we encourage people to come in very soon and talk to us about what calming products might be best to try for your situation, especially if your pets have had a hard time in the past, or if it's their first year of fireworks. The reason for this is that some products might work better than others for your particular pet. Being able to to try one or two (perhaps with the help of the YouTube fireworks videos) and be able to swap out something that didn't seem to work or they didn't like the taste of, etc is a smart idea. So many people run in the last few days before the 4th because their neighbors are already stocked up on big bangers and are trying them out ahead of time, causing big stress for their pets. Be prepared before that, so you can help your pets out through these events and prevent the potential stress.. If their first experiences are successfully mediated by calming treats, it may help them feel more secure as they encounter the real deal on the 4th.

3) ****Please check out my blog post about the 4th of July here. Did you know that there is a commonly prescribed veterinary medication that can actually create an even more traumatic experience for your dog?  There are other safety tips there that you might not have considered, and also a discussion about the different calming products we're carrying this year that might help you discern the pros and cons of various choices for dogs and cats and help you choose what to get.

DOYEN CAT PUZZLE TREAT BOX!

Walter is LOVING his new cardboard treat box. He's 7 months old now so he's very active.  He's also very smart, and "smart" means he's inquisitive, which is a dangerous combo with "active" in a cat, so he's always into stuff, as most young cats are. Luckily he's heavily treat motivated, so we've taught him a variety of tricks. Sometimes though, we'd like to sit on the couch. This toy is his very favorite these days, and he plays with it on his own for fairly long periods of time. We fill it with his favorite toys like the Crinkle Balls and miscellaneous stuff like elastic hair ties or the leather "Ms.Tick Mouse", along with 3 or 4 pieces of his favorite freeze dried treats. He used to enjoy a tissue dispenser box full of toys and treats, but the opening eventually allowed him to get his head stuck in it, so this new box solved that problem. He loves to go fishing in this thing, and it's the perfect size for arms but not heads. Check out this hilarious video, which ends with the coveted freeze dried salmon treat reward. He really has to work for it and it keeps him pretty busy! ("Oh, to only have thumbs"...)

SHOW OFF YOUR CATIO!

Join the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon and Portland Audubon in hosting the popular Catio Tour and help inspire cat parents to build or buy their own catio, large or small! Outdoor cat enclosures, aka "catios" (cat patios), offer fun outdoor time for kitties while keeping them safe from cars, coyotes, and other dangers - and keep birds and other wildlife safe from cats (Cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds every year in the U.S.!) Check out my blog post on Catios to learn more.

Do you have a great catio you want to show off – or know someone who does? Apply today to have your catio on the 10th Annual Catio Tour this September!

The tour showcases catios from simple DIY to designer styles and we encourage anyone in the Portland metro area to apply, so please share this info. Submissions to be on the tour will be accepted through June 27. This year’s Catio Tour will be on September 10th and will offer both in-person and online video tour options. Go to CatsSafeAtHome.org/catio to submit your catio for consideration.

GRIZZLY ALGAL OIL!

We love telling you about our most sustainable products, and this alternative to fish oil is really exciting to us! What? You're not using fish oil in your pet's diet? If so, they're missing out on valuable  Omega-3 fatty acids that help your pets in so many ways! It lubricates their joints, softens their hair and makes it shinier and more healthy, keeps the skin itchies away, and supports their eyes, brains, and immune health. (Omega-3s help people in the same way, by the way!)
Most Omega-3s are derived from fish oils, but m
arine algae is actually the original source of Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. All DHA and EPA found in fish originate from microalgae. Grizzly Algal Plus Oil enables your pet to access the benefits of omegas from algae directly!
Sourcing Omega-3 fatty acids from microalgae provides an unlimited supply without relying on fish from the ocean. If more algae is needed, more algae is simply grown, without any waste or negative impacts on shared environments or ecosystems.
Grizzly Algal Oil blends the best of both algae oil and flaxseed oil, resulting in a 100% vegetarian and vegan omega supplement without any fishy smell or fishy breath! It even has a frequent buyer program!

ONLY AN OCEAN SLOW FEEDER/LICK MAT!

These feeders are good for making a meal last longer, but they're also great for filling with moist food and treats (like canned foods, a bit of cottage cheese or yogurt, a little peanut butter, cooked sweet potato, goat's milk, etc) that you can then freeze to make them last longer. This type of frozen fun feeder can be a great tool on the 4th of July to distract a dog from the noises outside.

- HAPPY JUNETEENTH! "Juneteenth" (a blending of the words June and nineteenth), is a celebration held on June 19th each year, commemorating the day that enslaved persons in Galveston, Texas, were notified about the Emancipation Proclamation–almost 2.5 years after it was issued. A day marked with celebration and rejoicing, it is also a time for reflection and growth. The hope of this holiday is that peoples of all backgrounds and abilities might join each other in honoring this very important day by coming together to celebrate our differences, our similarities, our cultures, and each other.
