Subject: Big Weekend, Including a Secret Sale!

It’s a Big Weekend! Secret Sale, Cancer Fundraiser, and Children’s Book Debut!
Happy Summer!

Do you remember when we used to call the month of June “Junuary” every year, and we complained that we were tired of cold and rain and that it always rained on the Rose Parade? These last few weeks have really been an early summer smackdown, so I guess I'll jump right in in this newsletter to tell you about a few new products that will help you beat the heat this summer.
But first,
this Saturday June 22nd, We’ll be having a Secret Sale! Some sales are advertised to the public, but some are kept a secret, meant only for our newsletter subscribers as a way of thanking you, our regular customers. Please join us Saturday from 10-6 and take 15% off of any regularly priced items that aren’t pet food (complete diets you’d put in their bowl every day). This means all treats, chews, supplements, beds, leashes, collars, etc are all on sale!  Since it’s a secret, the discount will only be given if you tell us at the register that you get the newsletter, or at least give us a little wink and a nod that you’re in on the secret!

We'll also have an award winning author here to read from her new book, and a Stop Dog Cancer Furever! fundraiser and raffle.
Read On for Details!

Bring the Kids and Your Rescued Dogs for a special treat at 2PM Saturday!

Also happening during the sale, a local dog loving, award winning author will be reading her new picture book, "William To The Rescue". The book is first in a new series: "Bedtime Stories For Rescue Dogs“ illustrated by the amazing Lili Chin (you'll likely recognize her well known illustrations)! It's a tender story featuring William, an exuberant Chinese Crested who loves going on adventures with his dog walking friends, but when Momma goes on a business trip and is captured, William must set off on his biggest expedition yet - to bring her home!
Bedtime Stories for Rescue Dogs is a series of picture books designed for pet parents to read to their dogs. The series highlights the bravery, resilience and joy of rescue dogs. Sassafras also writes for national dog magazines like Dogster, Whole Dog Journal and The Bark as well as the local publication Pet Connection Magazine. She lives in Cully with her three dogs, and comes into Green Dog often with her young Newfoundland. A portion of the proceeds from each book in the series will be donated to dog rescue groups!

Enzo Memorial Fundraiser to Stop Cancer Furever!

Have you or anyone you know ever lost a dog to cancer? The sad truth is that most of you can probably answer yes to this question, as it is now the leading cause of death in dogs over 1 year of age. When one of our customers lost her precious dog Enzo to lymphoma, she decided to do something about it, and she began to hold annual fundraisers to benefit cancer research, which we have supported each year. On Sunday June 23rd from 11am - 2pm we'll be hosting a benefit with an amazing raffle, a fun activity and free cookies and cupcakes for dogs!
Jessica will be selling raffle tickets out in front of the store to benefit Morris Animal Foundation, a global leader in funding scientific studies that advance the health of companion animals. She has gotten some fantastic prizes lined up that you won’t want to miss a chance at winning! They include a Studio Pet Portrait session with PNW Critter Photography, a $50 Green Dog gift certificate, A Cycle Dog collar, an entire case of Swell Gelato for dogs and more (leashes, treats, toys and other goodies), as well as a few cat prizes including a bed from The Cat Ball. She’ll also be making free doggie paw prints, and giving away edible freebies from Chow Down treats and Pupcakes from Sugah’s Cookies!
If you can't make it on Sunday, she'll also be selling raffle tickets on Saturday during the sale, or simply click here to donate $5 or more and be entered into the raffle!  Learn more about Morris Animal Foundation Cancer research here and about their ethics here
July 4th is coming up fast!

Check out our blog post for suggestions about calming products for pets, tips for how to prepare, as well as safety reminders and strategies for the holiday and surrounding days of fireworks noise. Now is the time to try out calming treats to make sure they work for your pet!
Cooling Beds!

We’ve had a heck of a time finding cooling bed options for dogs for these crazy hot days, as many of the cooling beds out there have serious design flaws or logistical problems. We don’t want yucky gels in a material that might get punctured, or have to fill the bed with water that leaks out or makes them feel unstable underfoot, etc and they certainly don’t look nice. Most of them we've carried were returned. We finally found something fabulous! These are real beds. Soft, comfy, supportive and washable Memory Foam beds. Beds they’ll want to sleep on and you’ll want to have in your home. Their fully removable Memory Foam cushion not only provides exceptional support and comfort, but is also infused with COOL Gel Microbeads which help to regulate body temperature. The elegant European scalloped edge make this a stylish and luxurious option for crates, travel or a great low profile bed for the home. Zippered Cover is machine washable and dry-able. Foam insert is 2.5" thick (1.5" furniture grade foam topped with 1" of Cool Gel Memory Foam). We brought in two sizes (talk to us if you need an even bigger size) in three colors. These could be great year-round bed options for dogs that tend to run hot like Huskies and Bernese Mountain dogs.
Sun Shield Tees!

The Sun Shield Tee is silky soft, lightweight stretch jersey with a UPF-50 rating that blocks 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays. It is not a chemical treatment - it's a mechanical quality of the yarn so the protection won't diminish with washing. Super comfortable indoors and out and perfect for all sorts of applications beyond sun protection too: skin conditions, wound care, topical medications, works great as an anti-anxiety calming aid that can be worn all day.
They really reduce heat absorption too. Gold Paw tested their black Lab, Luke, out in the sun with an infrared thermometer gun and found his fur was more than 40 degrees cooler under the Tee than without – it’s wearable shade! Want extra cooling? Get it wet and your pup can enjoy the evaporative cooling effect! Made in the USA. Machine washable and can be worn easily under a harness.

New Responsibly Sourced Chews!

We recently realized (thanks to proactive and inquisitive employees that are always keeping us on our toes) that we keep a fairly regular schedule of checking on our food companies to make sure things like sourcing and safety protocols behind the scenes remain the same, but that we haven’t done a review in a while of our meaty treats. We got some unpleasant surprises about a few products we’ve loved, and in some cases we’ve let them go. Some products are so popular that we decided to keep them until we can source a replacement, though it hasn’t been so easy.
The mission we’ve chosen to try and source sustainable products is often a challenge in this industry, to say the least. What's allowed by the FDA to be fed in the pet food industry is shocking. There are of course many companies these days that make products that are made with human quality ingredients (and that’s important, and it's a big change from when we first opened in 2001), but the sad truth is that with some species like chicken and beef, human quality isn’t that perfect. Chickens may be “cage free”, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re outdoors in a field. They’re more likely living in dirty, overcrowded factory farming conditions in the form of big closed barns, fed a lot antibiotics to keep them from being sick. Beef for humans is often raised or at least finished in inhumane and dirty feed lots, fed growth hormones and heavy loads of antibiotics; and industrial pig farming is the worst of the worst. From an environmental perspective, factory farming is a nightmare of concentrated waste poisoning our air, water and soil, and massive antibiotic usage contributes to antibiotic resistance in humans. The good news is that the more humanely animals are raised, the better it is for the environment and the safer the meat is for our animals to consume. (Humans should be taking advantage of more plant based proteins as well as supporting biodynamic farms of all kinds. We like to think of eating less meat as carbon credits for the meat that we feed to our carnivorous fur kids).
We know our customers look to us to stock the good stuff, but also count on us to keep our prices low. Things haven’t been so great for any type of farmer these past few years due to climate changes and tariffs, as these new taxes significantly drive up the cost of their supplies. Some companies have understandably felt the need to either raise prices or switch to less sustainable sources, like with Kona’s Chips. We’re searching like mad for new brands that aren’t $40 a bag! (They’re still the best option out there that we can find, but we’re hunting for better.) Good news is, we’ve found some great new chews and bulk treats - check out the chews and raw bar area near the register for new buffalo and beef parts, dried capelin (fish) and more. We’ve especially scored big in the little dog chew category. Stay tuned for more!
