Don't Miss Dash To Donuts!
Hilarious Neighborhood Event

Sunday June 2nd from 9-12 This fun neighborhood event for kids and adults happens every year and shouldn’t be missed! It’s a 3K run that culminates in a journey down Fremont St. through all of the obstacles set up by participating businesses. The finish line is at Foot Traffic with free, fresh, hot donuts from the Pip’s Donut truck! While you're enjoying your donuts, you can listen to live music by long time Green Dog customer and local musician extraordinaire Pete Krebs (a double inductee to the Oregon Music Hall of Fame). There will also be a prize wheel, photo booth and more! Rain or shine, strollers and dogs are all welcome! This event is always a blast. We always set up a dog agility course for humans, made possible by borrowing equipment from both Doggy Business and Happy Go Lucky. We thank them for their generosity!  Get Your Tickets Here Before They're Sold Out!
Big News!

For the first time ever, Green Dog has made it on to the Ballot for Willamette Week’s Best of Portland award for Best Pet Supply Store! It seems like every year Pets on Broadway wins, and we’d like to have a shot at it. We were frankly disappointed to see Mud Bay on there - we wish that Big Box stores like Mud Bay (59 stores in the NW and counting) would not qualify at WWeek for the category of Local Businesses. We’d love to make sure that independently owned local businesses are well represented in these awards for Local Businesses!
I have to say, Mud Bay sure has created a challenge for us mom and pop shops in town. They seem to choose locations near successful independent stores to tap into their existing customer base. 13 locally owned stores (including Green Dog) have teamed up together into a coalition to help each other out, as so many of us have seen a decline in sales each time a new Mud Bay goes in nearby. We’re cross-marketing for each other, stressing the importance of supporting locally owned stores that keep money in the local economy and participate in activities that support our neighborhood communities. We stress the value of an extremely well-trained staff with years (often decades) of experience over the cookie cutter training programs of Big Box stores. These training programs hardly scratch the surface of the health, nutrition and behavior issues that we all encounter every day. We’re happy that our friends at The Filling Station also made the ballot this year; they’re part of this amazing coalition of local stores that like us are so dedicated to the mission of being a resource for our customers that they can really trust.
We could really use your help - a Willamette Week Award will really give us some much needed exposure! Please take a moment right now to go to Willamette Week and vote for Green Dog in the “Local Businesses” section! Thank You so much!
PS: look out for a number of other Beaumont businesses that have also made the ballots, especially Doggy Business!
Free Money!

We had a tough day Friday. For the second time this year, we lost power at the store all day, this time from 9:15am til 7:45pm. A waste management truck hit a power pole, and most of our block was out of business. Our battery backups only last an hour or two, and one of those failed right away (as it did last time before we had it "fixed"). We had to close at midday, and we had to figure out what to do with our 9 freezers filled with food. We were so grateful for offers from both Meat For Cats and Dogs and The Filling Station for their offers of Freezer space at their stores, but we knew that would be a big operation to pack it all up and get it back again, likely having to split it between the stores. It sure was nice to know it was an option though! #communitynotcompetition Luckily Charity’s boyfriend Evan had a truck and brought Melissa and Charity to Fred Meyers, where they were able to buy out their entire stock of dry ice for $400 and bring it back to the store. We loaded up the freezers and crossed our fingers that PGE would be able to get the power on by the evening. By 7:45 it was back on and we were able to get back into the store and yank all of the dry ice and clear out inches of snow on every shelf that the dry ice made. Luckily very little product was lost. What a day!
To help us recoup our losses and to say thank you for your wonderful support through thick and thin, we’d like to offer you this: For the next week, Green Dog Gift Certificates will be 10% off! You can come in to purchase, or simply call us to buy one over the phone. We will happily mail it to you or the lucky gift certificate recipient!
Answers Cow's Milk Cheese!

Some of you are already big fans of Answers brand cultured goat cheese treats in the freezer. They've recently come out with cow’s milk cheeses! Both of these lines of cheese are among our very favorite products in the store, though a lot of people don't know about them as they're "hidden" in a freezer. Dogs and cats both tend to love cheese, and these delicious nuggets are probiotic-rich and full of the many other nutritional benefits of raw milk cheeses. Incredibly digestible because of all of the digestive enzymes, these cheeses are also rich in enzymes that help to clean the teeth and support the health of the gums. They all come in different yummy flavors. The goat’s milk cheeses come in superfood flavors of cranberry, blueberry, cherry, turmeric, ginger, and spirulina. The new cow’s milk cheeses come in flea fighting flavors of garlic (we've really enjoyed snacking on these), turmeric/black pepper, and cumin.
Answers says, “It’s what’s inside that counts. Repel nasty flea, ticks and mosquitoes with a 3-in-1 kaPOW! punch. "Rewards" Grassfed Raw Cow Cheese Bites, enhanced with organic turmeric with black pepper, organic garlic and organic cumin naturally repel insects from the inside out. No chemicals, no collars, no worries. Feed all 3 daily through out the flea tick season for maximum benefits. 1-2 each for small breeds, 2-3 each for medium, and 4-6 each for large breeds. 19 calories of raw goodness brings digestive enzymes, good bacteria, and fat-soluble vitamins. Health benefits include immune and inflammatory support, improve bone mass, improve blood sugar regulation, greater amounts of omega-3s, reduce body fat. 30 milligrams of CLA from one ounce of grassfed raw cheese! This increased amount is due to our cows eating fresh grasses every day”.
Like all Answers products, they come with a buy 10 get one Frequent Buyer card that we keep track of!

Upcoming Big Special: For The month of June, all 3 flavors will be Buy 2 Get One Free!!

K-9 Natural Freeze Dried Tripe “Booster”

This is another one of our favorite products in the store, and so we’re excited to have been able to bring in the big bags! Our customers like it because their dogs just LOOOVE it! It’s a very rare occasion when even the pickiest dog turns down freeze dried tripe! Why do we love it? Because tripe is a natural Superfood, loaded with nutrients! It’s is a great digestive aid because it's probiotic-rich and is packed with digestive enzymes. A healthy gut lining means a strong immune system, helping to prevent many health issues. This makes it ideal for sensitive stomachs and allergy prone pets. You can add tripe to make diet transitions easier, crumble it over other foods to entice picky eaters, and it’s especially fantastic as a high value training treat for dogs and cats too! K-9 Natural even offers a Frequent Buyer Card for any of their products, buy 12 get one (we keep track).
Newsletter Special: Mention the newsletter at the register and you can take 15% off off of any K-9 tripe Booster (small or large bags). Offer good through June 4th.

Pickle Pocket!

One of our most durable toys, this toy is also great for hiding treats. It has 3 deep grooves that are great for filling with jerky or wedging small cookies into. It has stood up amazingly well to really heavy chewers. It’s not a toy that's guaranteed against chewing by the company like West Paw, (and of course every toy can be chewed apart by some dog), but we’ve been so impressed by its durability! If your dogs can’t chew up a black Kong, they likely won’t be able to destroy this one. It’s a real champ, and is made from a nice bouncy soft-feeling material that won’t hurt their teeth (very rare to find something this durable that isn’t as hard as a rock!) This brand also makes a bouncy ball version that dispenses treats has stood up well to those that can’t chew up a red Kong. Newsletter Special: Mention the newsletter at the register and you can take 15% off off of any of these Starmark Treat Dispensing Toys! Offer good through June 4th.
Neighborhood News

* The Old Bottles space: We were sorry to see our friends at Bottles leave the neighborhood, but we're pretty excited that when they reached out for buyers, they found a great one! The folks that bought it own 3 other really cool spots in town. The Tough Luck on NE Dekum is one of Mike and Christine's favorite spots -  it's a neat place with great cocktails and food. They also own Paydirt on Sandy in the Zipper building, and Old Gold on N. Killingsworth. They've been working hard already giving the old Bottles space a facelift (though it already has one of the best patios in town). The new owners say, "“Our humble goal is to be the best neighborhood bar we possibly can; a tiny beacon in the neighborhood where our neighbors can come for a ice-cold pint on the sun-soaked patio, a dizzying array of spirits, an unpretentious cocktail menu, and creative food menu." The food menu will be dedicated to a well-curated selection of sandwiches, greens, and sharable snacks. “Nothing too simple, yet nothing too complex. It’s a menu that compliments our robust cocktail program, yet is accessible and family-friendly.” They're hoping to be open by mid June.

* Wow - Did you know that the Arrangement just turned 39 years old?

*
Anchor End Euro Cafe and Bakery was hailed as one of the Best New Portland Brunch Spots of 2019 by the Oregonian!

* The neighborhood is getting a new Art Installation by Ivan McLean. This 4 ft. metal sphere will be installed by the BBA within the next few months in the Foot Traffic courtyard.

* There is some interest in the Alameda Brewpub space - we'll keep you posted when we know something concrete!
