Hi Friend,

I know, it's neither Taurus nor Scorpio Season, but this week a reader posed a question and I felt the answer is really very important for all of us to understand.

Many of us will be working with the Taurus-Scorpio polarity in some way, particularly if you have Sun, Moon or Rising Sign on those signs, but also if your Lunar Nodal Axis or other planets are involved. If it's the outer planets (like many of us who are part of the Neptune in Scorpio generation) we are working this dynamic out on a generational level, yet it can still feel very personal to us because there can be aspects with our personal planets, and also because of the intensely personal nature of the energy involved!

For most of us who seek to go deeper on our spiritual path of self-exploration, understanding this question is vital.

This week a reader with Sun in Taurus asked:

"You spoke about releasing attachment to desire, what does that mean?"

The spiritual path of Taurus-Scorpio (Scorpio-Taurus) is all about releasing attachment to desire. On the Taurus end of the spectrum we are working more with attachment, and at the Scorpio end of the spectrum more with desire, but it is all one energetic spectrum.

Before we can think about releasing attachment to desire, we need to sit deeply with the question “What is attachment?”
Once you can deeply understand attachment, and then through self-observation watch how it permeates your life… then you are well on the road to understanding ‘attachment to desire’ and releasing it.

But we can’t change what we can’t see… and most of us can’t see attachment because it is sooo insidious in our world, and our modern culture. For example every time we see a commercial, they are tapping into and increasing, our desire and our attachment to desire.

We might think of it as ‘addiction’ albeit on a very subtle level. For example, we don’t normally think we are ‘addicted’ to our morning coffee with cream and two sugars, but if we don’t get it, or we get it but they put milk in instead, or no sugar, or sweeteners, we feel frustrated, angry and irritable. In buddhist psychology it is thought that the root cause of anger is attachment.

There is a really funny and wise buddhist nun, Ven. Robina Courtin, who speaks at length on this. I highly recommend listening to her teachings (especially ‘addiction vs freedom’ which you can listen to here). She often says ‘anger is when attachment doesn’t get what it wants’.

If you practice observing yourself as you go through the day, notice especially whenever you get angry. It is a powerful teacher because it is showing you exactly where you are attached to something. That ‘something’ could be an idea, an expectation, a desire, a thing… we are attached to so much we normally don’t even see it!

Look at the example of someone cutting in front of you in busy traffic… why do we feel anger? Because our ‘desire’ to continue moving the way we wanted to, is thwarted. Next time it happens check in with yourself, and see if that feels true. See what is underneath the anger.

To stay in the peaceful core of your being it is vital to release attachment to desire… because it is following desire (or to be more specific it is the attachment to desire)  that pulls us off center.
Here's what I mean. Imagine you are enjoying a peaceful meditation when suddenly, just like Homer Simpson, a thought pops in your head, 'mmm... cheeseburger'. If you have no interest and no attachment, you may just let the thought go and your inner tranquil state remains undisturbed. If you fancy a cheeseburger you may follow the thought and start planning how and where you'll get your cheeseburger. You've left your tranquil center and followed the thought.

Even if you don't follow the thought, and don't plan to get a cheeseburger, if you have attachment, you may still feel agitated inside. You may be attached to the desire for your meditation to be a certain way, and now this darned thought about cheeseburgers is invading your space! You can see how it's not even about whether you get a cheeseburger or not, but the attachment to things being a certain way has ended your tranquility and agitated your mind. This is what the buddha discovered and which is why I quote the buddha's teachings so much, Especially when I’m talking about Taurus-Scorpio because he had 6 planets in Taurus, so he deeply understood and mastered the Taurus-Scorpio path.

As you go forward through your day notice where you feel frustrated, agitated or angry, and ask yourself 'what do I need to let go of here?'
That's the way to start work on healing the path of Taurus-Scorpio!

Best Wishes,

Ruth
