Subject: Lessons of Virgo: What Keeps Us So Busy?

Hi Friend,

Have you noticed that, despite all out technological advances ( and very likely BECAUSE of them), we are busier than ever?

What keeps us busy? On one level it’s very simple. What keeps us busy is following the mind or, to be more specific, what keeps us busy is following the mercurial mind. What do I mean by mercurial mind? In western astrology we tend to think of the mind as mercurial in nature anyway, but this is not quite the full picture...

In eastern mystical traditions there is a much more expansive view of ‘mind’. In the west we tend to think of mind as our thoughts whereas in the east the mind is thought of as the fullness of all our experience. In fact at the purest level, mind it is said to be the ground of our being in which all of our experiences, including our thoughts, arise.

For example if we think about wallpaper (I mean the good old-fashioned paper type that’s on a physical wall… not what’s on your computer) there is the pattern in the foreground, the background colors, and then the paper itself upon which everything else is printed. Our mercurial mind, our thoughts, are just like the pattern in the foreground. We are so conditioned to keep our attention on them, that we forget everything else is there and think that that’s what our mind is. Just our thoughts.

Through meditation we can learn to take a more holistic view so that we remember how to see the whole at once. We are still aware of thoughts, and we are also aware of all other experiences (the background color of the wallpaper), and we become increasingly aware of awareness itself. This is the underlying consciousness out of which all else is arising (in our wall paper analogy that would be the actual paper)!

Usually, if we have no experience of meditation or self-exploration, our thoughts go unquestioned and unexamined. Because they fully occupy our mind (we believe they ARE our mind and we are unaware of other aspects of our being) we tend to identify with them and follow each thought without question. It feels like we are making our own choices and decisions, but are we? How many of these thoughts are original, and how many are simply the result of our societal and familial conditioning?

At this level thoughts are said to be mercurial in that they are fluid in nature, move rapidly and keep changing shape and form. Esoterically Virgo has two planetary rulers: Mercury and Virgo. At the personality level Mercury can keep us enslaved to the ‘monkey’ mind which hops from one thought to the next, urging us ever onward… to the next thing …to the next thing …to the next thing ...and so on. Like rats following the Pied Piper the mind hums a tune and we come running, following our own inner ‘drill sergeant’! This only stops when we make a conscious decision to put the brakes on. Stop. Look. Listen. …and watch the mind without following.

Each of the 12 zodiac signs can be thought of as teaching us deeper spiritual lessons. In Virgo we need to cultivate the capacity to stop and check our motivation. The sign of Virgo is also associated with vocation. The word vocation comes from the latin ‘vocare’ meaning ‘to call’, and the path of vocation in Virgo is all about learning how to listen to our deeper spiritual calling, rather than following the antics of the monkey-mind. How often do you stop and check? Are you hearing your inner calling? Are you just blindly following ‘the monkey’?

This is also why Virgo is associated with the finer qualities of discernment, but before we can truly develop discernment we also have to be able to sense what it is we are discerning. The Soul ruler of Virgo is the Moon. The Moon is associated with the feminine, feeling nature, receptivity, the cycle of night, and reflected light. In the Tibetan dzogchen tradition the path to wholeness is sometimes referred to as the ‘union of Sun and Moon’. Through the connection with feelings, instincts and emotions, and the esoteric connection with physical forms, the Moon helps us to cultivate our capacity for the kinesthetic felt-sense in the body, which is a hallmark of Virgo. This in turn helps us to develop a fuller awareness of our being, beyond thoughts.

Once we realize our true nature as the whole wallpaper and not just the pattern, we realize who we really are. We recognize that we ARE the light of consciousness itself and not the individual thoughts arising within. We become the Master of our ‘mind’ and not the servant. In the highest of Virgo we know the distinction between service and servitude. We understand what true service really means and by sensing collective consciousness (Moon-Virgo) we are able to skilfully provide what is NEEDED for the betterment of humanity (not what our ego-personality is wanting).

When we fully integrate the lessons of Virgo we are less busy, because we are not following the daily fluctuations of our monkey-mind but rather we are following a focused path of spiritual service which is for the highest and best good of ALL (including ourselves).

That's all for now! See you next week and, in the meantime...  happy exploring!

Best Wishes,

Ruth
