Subject: How Relaxed Are You?

Life's Greatest Adventure!
July 3rd 2013
Hi Friend,

Have you ever wondered why I promote and teach the "Laura Mitchell Method" of relaxation? First, it was the first effective relaxation technique that I learned, many years ago. I had experienced visualizations, guided meditations and similar techniques where you listen to a recording lie down and relax and, while they were very pleasant, my experience of those was entirely in my head. My mind went on a beautiful journey while my body was probably as tense as it was to begin with only I wouldn't know for sure because I didn't notice it.

I first came across the Mitchell Method as a Student Midwife. We were fully trained by Obstetric Physiotherapists so that as midwives we would teach it to women and their partners in our ante-natal classes (which I did for many years). The first time we experienced the technique half the class fell asleep! We had never known such deep relaxation. Certainly it was the most relaxed I had ever felt in my body.

This technique works because it physiologically relaxes your muscles while cultivating somatic awareness (the 'felt-sense' in the body) at the same time. So not only do your muscles relax, but also you are aware of it. This somatic awareness is essential. It is probably one of the most helpful things I have ever learned, and it remains with me to this day.

Second, I believe we really underestimate the importance of relaxation in our everyday lives. Life these days is a complete whirlwind with so many of us carried away on a 'tornado' of distraction from the moment we open our eyes each morning. Cellphones, iPods, iPads, computers, TV,  work demands, incessant advertising and relentless social networking, have created the new techno-slavery.

We are slaves to our gadgets and 'beeping' things, and are less somatically aware than ever.
It seems we don't have time to check-in with how we feel, and are no longer masters of where we place our own attention. We are increasingly losing control of our minds to outside distractions.

These days it is more important than ever to experience a relaxed body and mind, as a foundation for our lives.
A normal relaxed state is essential for our health and well-being and for the normal functioning of body and mind.

After all these years I still like the Mitchell Method,
because it is simple and requires only a small investment of your time each day to learn.  In my experience it really works and although it isn't called meditation, in essence it was the first meditation that I learned.  If you're curious whether it would be helpful to you, listen to the sample tutorial on my website and try it for yourself. And if you fall asleep too, you were probably holding more tension in your system than you realized!

See you next time, and in the meantime...
happy exploring!

Best Wishes,

Ruth
