Every now and then I meet someone who tells me they’ve transcended their astrology. This is a very interesting topic to explore in a little more depth, especially as it relates directly to our journey of self-exploration and self-realization.
First I wonder, is that possible? If astrology is a language of energy, and everything is energy, can we ‘transcend’ that which we are? Before we go too far of course we should also take a quick look at what it actually means to transcend.
...and then when people say “I’ve transcended my astrology” what do they mean? Because they must have noticed that something has changed, or is different, and that is what they are referring to.

| | In the English language words often have more than one meaning. Here are three possible meanings of the word 'transcend' from thefreedictionary.com:
1. To pass beyond the limits of (a category or conception, for instance): "our desire to ... find love, recognition and acceptance that transcends stereotype, class, age, poverty and physical imperfection" (Catherine Orenstein).
2. To be greater than, as in quality or intensity; surpass: a new film that transcends all her previous efforts.
3. To exist above and independent of (material experience or the universe): "One never can see the thing in itself, because the mind does not transcend phenomena" (Hilaire Belloc).
Let’s apply each definition to astrology, and explore the two questions - ‘is it possible’? and ‘what to they mean’? So by applying the first dictionary definition, to ‘transcend astrology’ would be ‘to pass beyond the limits of astrology’. Well in this case I would say that it is possible to pass beyond the ‘limits’ but not astrology itself. In my experience astrology is an ever-evolving language of light and energy.
As with any body of knowledge, as humanity evolves in consciousness, there will of course be times when we bump up against the limitations of old and outdated patterns of thought, and it is time to expand our definitions in line with higher consciousness. An example of this might be in how we interpret Saturn (the archetype of limitation itself). A keyword for Saturn is limitation, however, as we expand in consciousness and become more aware we might also apply Melanie Reinhart’s elevated keyword for Saturn: authenticity.
Does this mean we no longer experience limitation? That is debatable. We may be free in our mind as we experience enlightenment and liberation. We may feel light and unencumbered, but we will still experience some physical limitation as long as we are incarnated in a physical body. We won’t be able to fly for example, or run at 100 mph! We are limited in some way by the physical capacity of this body.
So when people say they’ve transcended their astrology, in relation to this first definition of ‘transcend’ they could mean that they have gone beyond the lower consciousness experience of the energy, and are experiencing a different quality: a higher expression.
So let's apply definition 2: is it possible to ‘surpass’ our astrology? Well, similar to the example above, I believe so. It is possible to surpass the lower expressions of the energy and enter the higher expressions… but can we go beyond the energy altogether? Once again I wonder how is that possible, as long as we are in a physical body.
The example that comes to mind here is of a woman who has Sun in Scorpio (ruled by Mars) and she once told me she had ‘transcended her astrology’. This is a very spiritually-oriented lady who very much is on a path towards peace. I can see how she wouldn’t relate at all to one of the most common keywords for Mars which is ‘aggression’. However, this lady is a strong character. She has a lot of physical energy and is very motivated and busy in the world creating environments to support people in their spiritual journey.
If we look at the higher consciousness expressions of Mars, we see that Mars relates to personal drive, assertiveness and right use of will. So while this lady no longer experiences Martian energy as aggression, she seems to me to be applying her tireless Martian energy (and her strong will) on a daily basis to do her work in the world!
Finally according to dictionary definition number 3, to transcend astrology would be ‘to exist above and independent of one’s astrology’. As we explore this fascinating subject of course we must also bear in mind that however we define ‘astrology’ is going to affect our thinking. The question ‘what is astrology’ would take up too much space to explore here, but I have written a two-part article on my blog exploring this in more depth, which you can read here.
For our purposes here let’s simply say that astrology is a language of light and energy. Esoteric astrology or Soul Astrology is a language that we can use to describe our spiritual journey, our evolving consciousness, and our experience of the true nature of reality. Can we exist above and independent of our own true nature, or reality? Of course not. So in this sense we don’t transcend our astrology, because we don’t transcend our own consciousness. We are never separate from all that is.
Can we ‘transcend’ the use of astrology as a language? Kind of, but we wouldn’t normally use the word transcend. It is perfectly valid and appropriate to say 'I choose not to use astrology as a language to describe my experience, that doesn’t resonate for me'. This is simply a matter of choice, not of ‘transcending’.
