English Tip of the Week

Apostrophes

Today I'm going to prove to you that rules for the apostrophe are easier to understand than you might think.

Rule 1. Use the apostrophe with contractions. The apostrophe is always placed at the spot where any letters have been removed.

Examples:

don't, isn't

You're right.

She's a great teacher.

Rule 2: Use the apostrophe to show possession. Place the apostrophe before an s at the end of the word to show singular possession.

Examples:

one girl's dress

one author's book

one child's toy

Rule 3: To show plural possession, make the noun plural first. Then immediately use the apostrophe.

Examples:

two boys' hats

two women's hats

two children's hats

Write Effective Dialogue
Relevant and well-written dialogue can drive a story forward with an intensity that captivates and enthralls the reader. Coupled with active and descriptive narrative, dialogue ensures that the reader receives full entertainment value from your fictional stories or novels.

Writing Free Verse
In this class we will develop your ability to write free verse poetry. You will learn what free verse is as well as what free verse is not. You'll learn how to use it to express powerful feelings, and, what's more to the point, how to express feelings powerfully.

Engage Readers with Point of View (POV)
You have a story idea; the plot and the planned twist ending have you itching to get it down on paper. But whose point of view will tell the tale? Establishing POV in prose and using it effectively engages readers. In this course, we will explore the nuances of POV.

Write Flash Fiction
Good flash fiction advertises your writing skills and helps build a portfolio of published work. Stories of micro length (up to 300 words) and longer (up to 1000 words) are always in demand. Markets are available now--eager to accept original flash fiction stories.
