ADVENT/CHRISTMAS 2018 @ FUMC-DERIDDER
HURRY UP AND WAIT! In a post-resurrection church in a post-Christian society, this is pretty much an impossible task as it seems so many are caught up in so much going on they echo the cry of that great social commentator from the 1980's, Huey Lewis, who just wanted, "A Couple Days Off." Who in the world has time to proactively wait? After all, Jesus promised almost 2,000 years ago he'd be back - who could blame anyone for being at least slightly skeptical?

Our Advent 2018 Worship Series, "Told Ya So!", is a call to us all from the prophets of old (several hundred years or more before Christ) who also spread the message of faithful waiting to people who were getting tired of the waiting for this Messiah who was going to deliver them from all the despair of the world. Each week of this series we will draw from the Old Testament lesson of the day to be reminded of and inspired by a God who keeps their promises as we continue the multi-generational, multi-millennial wait for Christ to come again in glory.
What better time to explore (or explore again) the hope of the Gospel? Beloved and respected by scholars, preachers, and laity alike, Walter Brueggemann offers penetrating insights on Scripture and prophetic diagnoses of our culture. Instead of maintaining what is safe and routine, A Gospel of Hope encourages readers to embrace the audacity required to live out one’s faith. This must-have volume gathers Brueggemann’s wisdom on topics ranging from anxiety and abundance to partisanship and the role of faith in public life. Get your copy from the church office and be ready for our first session on December 5 @ 6:00PM!
A SERVICE OF HEALING & HOPE
A SERVICE OF LIGHT IN THE MIDST OF DARKNESS

LET'S BE HONEST - Not everyone finds this to be, to borrow a phrase, "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!" There are myriad reasons why you (or someone you know is struggling) as Christmas arrives. Maybe it's present uncertainty. Maybe it's a Christmas where someone you love is not here. Maybe it's related to grief over another kind of loss. Maybe it's some depression or hopelessness. This service is for those who are feeling loss, grief, and/or disconnected as it seems everyone else isn’t. Within this sacred time of worship near the longest night of the year, we will be invited to not suppress our emotions, but to bring them to God through prayer, scripture, silence, communion, light, and song through this time to find hope, comfort, and healing for any & all seeking the same.
