Making an Impact: Thea's Story

2020 had not been kind to Thea*, a single mother of three school-age children. As if dealing with a global pandemic was not enough, she became ill and began having seizures, making it difficult to work, eventually costing her job. Around the same time, the reason for her seizures became known - brain tumor. The growth was determined to be benign, so due to Covid and overtaxed hospitals, she had to wait to receive treatment. With no job and poor health, Thea and her children lost their home and began living in her car.

In late November of 2020, Thea sought the help of Family Promise of Butler County (FPBC). Her family was taken into shelter and placed in a hotel room (congregations were not able to host families at that time). The FPBC staff worked with her and supported her through this most difficult time. In January of 2021, while still in the shelter program, she was able to get the surgery she needed to have the tumor removed.

Over the next several months, Thea was able to go to rehab to regain her strength, literally get back on her feet, and to attain permanent disability status. Thankfully, her mother lives nearby and was able to assist with the children and some of her other needs. In early August of 2021, she graduated from the FPBC program and moved with her family into permanent housing.

Thea still checks in with FPBC regularly. While she has not fully recovered and likely will always have some cognitive impairment as a result of the tumor, she has a strong spirit and enjoys staying in touch with her new friends. We at Family Promise of Butler County are so grateful to have the resources to assist families struggling with homelessness, and especially for the special relationships forged along the way.

Staff and Board members will be on hand to give tours and answer questions!
Light refreshments will be available. :)

Welcome to 2022! It’s hard to believe that we are almost through February already!

As we roll into the new year, we would like to take the opportunity to invite you to join us in our mission of serving those children and their families who are experiencing homelessness or preventing families from entering the homeless system.

At this time, we are going back to our rotational hosting model, and we are in need of at least 2 new host congregations. With the return of the rotational model, we will also be able to start a new program that will include educational components for the parents to have more tools to stabilize their housing. Additionally, we continue to provide financial assistance and case management to those families who need prevention.

We are growing! We have settled into our new Day Center (yay!). One new staff member has been hired and we are currently looking for a new Sunday staff member and a part-time administrative assistant to join our team. We are also in need of 2 new board members.

Finally, we have some important “Save the Dates” for you:
