Subject: There's a good chance your breakfast sausage is complicit...

Complicit in what, exactly?
Hey Food Slayer!

We'll get to that in a moment, but in the past few episodes, I've been talking a lot about meat, which is weird for someone who used to be a vegetarian.

Truth is, as I pull back the curtain, more and more gunk emerges about the ugly truth within the meat industry. And it's pretty nauseating...

So, whether you eat meat (whether it's fish, beef, pork, turkey, chicken or lamb) or not, knowing where meat is coming from and who is raising it, has become a focus for environmental activists, the economy and for people like you and me.

Since I've started interviewing farmers in the "Farmer Spotlight" series, I've learned a lot about the importance of local meats and why they are just better...all the way 'round.

But, I encourage you to hear it from "the horse's mouth". Check out the full episode here :

Thanks for being here...let's keep the conversation going so we can all have clean, healthy food on our plates!
Meet Nathan and Amanda Moomaw. They started Moomaw Family Farms in 2013, and they run a thriving local meat CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) group in Oregon City, OR.

Nathan and Amanda have 400 customers that LOVE their products and there's no sign that anything will change anytime soon. Thankfully. And that speaks volumes about what consumers want, right?

Right. Because if we've learned anything, we know that the meat industry's moral and environmental values are well distanced from most people's values.

The small producer meat industry is definitely under threat, from farmland to the plate. Luckily, there are a few folks like Nathan and Amanda that understand the health, environmental and economic impacts of raising livestock, on pasture, and with partners.

There are many benefits we can realize by supporting local meat farmers. Regenerating pasture, achieving more complete nutrition, raising healthier animals, creating fair wages for farmers, restoring local food security, building bonds with community, and on and on.

Yet, we can't say those things about the "Big 4" meat behemoths. In fact, we'd have to say the exact opposite on almost every count.

Talking with Nathan was very inspiring to me because I too, raise animals for meat consumption and I know just how much work is involved. However, there are so many upsides that emerge from that hard work - which is what drives people like Nathan and Amanda to continue to serve and feed their local community, with great pride.

I sincerely hope you can find a (meat or veggie) community supported agriculture group wherever you live and support them, because at the end of the day, won't you feel good knowing that your local farmer isn't participating in child labor violations? Or in the destruction of the rainforests? Or in the contamination of your water? Or participating in the importation of meat from all over the world without you even knowing it?

I feel pretty good knowing that I'm doing everything I can to eat clean, eat healthy and love my food. My hope is, after listening to Nathan in this episode, you'll get inspired too. *finger's crossed*

See you on the other side of the plate!

Chow,
Michele
