Subject: It hasn't been this bad since 1982!

That was 40 frickin' years ago....
Hey Food Slayer!

So, if you're not over 40 you probably don't remember the "Regan Era"...but if you ARE over 40, you lived through one of the highest inflationary cycles in history.

I don't have any good news to follow that statement. :(
Thanks for being here...let's keep the conversation going so we can all have clean, healthy food on our plates!
But I can say...this is just the beginning.

Inflation is a funny thing. Not funny, as in "haha" funny...but funny like, it does something unpredictable to society. People freak out. We get stressed. We worry and feel overwhelmed...because someone is messing with our ability to feed and secure our families. How do you say, cortisol!

Inflation raises cortisol levels, but it lowers the value of pensions, social security payments, and food stamps...because the dollar has less buying power.
The reality is...it's complicated.

Even if you're not on social security or food stamps, we are seeing in real time, double digit percentage increases for certain food commodities like we haven't seen since the early 1980's. It's certainly not as bad as the hyperinflation in Venezuela in 2020, when the inflation rate was a whopping 2,959%! Nay, nay.

But just a 10% increase in price, here in the U.S., for foods like meat and eggs can really strain your monthly budget for food. Sadly, global food price increases are even higher.

According to the UN Global Food Price Index, sugar prices are up 20% and vegetable oils are up 34%...and of course, gas prices are making me want to stay home everyday, and the Ukraine/Russia thing, well...it is forcing wheat price futures up off the charts.

So, what does all this mean for folks like us?

That's a great question.

It means, we're spending an average of $250/month extra on food right now. It means that the buying power of the dollar will continue to decline. It means that if the bottom "falls out"...people will be forced to do with less...It means we may see food shortages again and some will face food insecurity everyday....especially elders on fixed incomes and middle and low income families.

Look...I'm not trying to get you all hyped up. What I am striving to do in this Season 8 Finale is, help you get inspired to take some responsibility for your food security this year and grow some of your own food. Now is the time. Don't delay...

Time to build some resilience, folks. Because the reality is...it ain't getting any better, anytime soon.

I appreciate you listening to this episode and sharing it with someone you love. Take good care of yourselves. In the meantime, in between time, I'm going to get my plants ready for the season but I may have something special for you next week that's slightly more encouraging. :)

Chow,
Michele
