Subject: "Give them bread and circuses and they will never revolt!"

That's what the Romans used to say...
Hey Food Slayer!

Sadly, those words still ring true many, many centuries later. If you've never heard of the phrase "Bread and Circuses" you're in for a treat. The quote in the subject line of this message was a direct quote from a Roman poet named Juvenal. He was a satirist...of course!

But he was making an important point about society.
Thanks for being here...let's keep the conversation going so we can all have clean, healthy food on our plates!
We think we're soooo smart...

Maybe we're just distracted. Apparently, our overlords believe that all we need are bread and circuses and we shall never revolt...they might be right. In Latin, it is written as "panem et circusensus", and what Juvenal was describing was how politicians maintain public approval through distraction.

If you take a step back and look at the news cycle, or better said, the YouTube algorithmic cycle, you'll be reminded to check out what Elon Musk is saying today about his Twitter purchase. Or maybe you'll get the recommendation to watch the 10 minute long video of Johnny Depp being hilarious in court...again. Or maybe a TikTok video will pop up on your phone of the dancing quadra-color giraffe people. (I just made that last one up:)...

Either way, thinking about all this made me wonder...what are we being distracted from and why?
Welcome to Season 9...it's gonna be a "hot time in the old town tonight...fire, Fire, FIRE!"

Food production facilities are on fire but we're not talking about it. Instead, we're distracted by circuses.

To be precise, thirty (30) facilities across the United States have been impacted by fires in the past 17 months. Some are back in business and some have been completely destroyed.

Comparatively speaking, in 2019, there were only two facilities that were reported as being destroyed by fire. So...why so many? And why right now?

Good questions.

If you're thinking what I'm thinking the answers seem obvious. Especially if we take into account the inflationary cycle we're in, the millions of birds being slaughtered due to avian flu, and world leaders warning us back in March that we "can expect food shortages" yet in the same breath saying...don't bother stockpiling food. Look away.

Nothing to see here. You're a conspiracy theorist for thinking otherwise.

Maybe that's true. Maybe there is nothing to see. Maybe, each and every one of the fires I mention in this episode is purely accidental. Or maybe, we should blame it on severely lacking safety protocols. Or disgruntled former employees who just so happen to be arsonists. Or maybe, there's outdated self-combusting equipment filled with 600 tons of ammonium nitrate in these facilities?

Plausible? Perhaps...but it just doesn't "jive" for me.

I dunno...call me a skeptic. Call me a conspiracy theorist. Call me whatever you want to. It matters not. What matters is, the reality and understanding WHY these events are happening. Regardless of whether they are accidental or intentional, the outcome is the same.

Less food. There will be less food available. Coming soon, to a community near you. My hope is, that we begin to turn our focus toward what matters...

That's all. I'll let you decide what you think about this and then you can decide what you want to do about it. I look forward to hearing your thoughts over in the community I'm building over on Locals.com. I hope you check it out and join me over there to keep the conversation going...and THANKS for listening to this episode and sharing it with someone you love.

Chow,
Michele
