Tree Planters Needed

The Staunton Legacy Tree Project (by Shenandoah Green) is seeking spring volunteer tree planters on a variety of dates and locations between March 13th - 21st. Read about the project HERE. Sign up to volunteer HERE. Trees reduce our community's carbon footprint, reduce erosion and provide cooling shade and food to river critters when planted streamside.

You may have read that there is a new access fee requirement for public boat access sites such as at the Port Republic Boat Launch. The new fee would not affect any sites on Middle River, because Middle River access sites are all privately owned.

The legislation that went into effect on January 1, 2021, has proved to be controversial and the law is being reviewed. At the time of this writing, it is unclear whether the fee will continue, be amended or be terminated.

From an article in the News Virginian on February 10, 2021, it states: "The state budget, which the General Assembly released Wednesday, includes an amendment to squelch that fee until next fiscal year, which starts July 1, 2022. Meanwhile, a study group will look at the costs, benefits and impacts on recreational users, then submit a report to the General Assembly by Oct. 1."

January E. coli Data

E. coli data for Christian's Creek HERE. Only 4 out of 12 sites this month in the Christians Creek Watershed show elevated E. coli levels. This is an improvement over the sampling results of recent months and likely reflects livestock staying out of the waters in the cooler weather. There is no data to report this month for Middle River.

If the number of Colony Forming Units per 100ml is over 235, the water is not safe for recreational use.

"Forever Chemicals" Webinar

From the Waterkeepers Chesapeake:

"PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a class of more than 9000 man-made chemicals common in firefighting and non-stick coatings that persist in the environment and in the human body, earning them the nickname 'forever chemicals.' They are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, immune suppression, and reproductive problems. A CDC survey found PFAS in the blood of 97% of the participants.

Critical PFAS contamination research is being conducted in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Important bills have passed or are being proposed to study and stop PFAS contamination of our local rivers and streams, drinking water, fish and oysters. Join our discussion on Thursday, February 18th, 7:00-8:30pm with researchers, lawmakers, and advocates to learn what you can do to help stop PFAS contamination."
