Subject: A New Year, a New Chair!

New Year, New Leadership!

In January, the Friends of the Middle River Board of Directors completed long-range planning to fill critical positions on the board. Board Chair, Joe McCue, has rotated off the board. Our new Board Chair is Nancy Owens. Welcome, Nancy! Nancy is an avid paddler and previously worked many years with the Lifelong Learning Institute at James Madison University.

Joe has been with FOMR since its early days in various capacities and has served as chairperson twice. The board recognizes the tremendous contributions Joe has made and we look forward to his continued contributions in the future.

The board renamed several committees and reassigned some committee work to better reflect the purpose and the mission of FOMR. All 2021 board positions and committee chairs are now filled as follows:

  • Chair: Nancy Owens

  • Vice-Chair: John Bauman

  • Secretary: Tom Shapcott

  • Treasurer: Jeanine Botkin

  • Fundraising Committee Chair: Lonni Neavear

  • Science Committee Chair: Pete Cooper

  • Stewardship Committee: Dave Mangun

  • Education Committee Chair: Marion Bittinger

  • Community Programs Committee Chair: Paul Bryant

  • Marketing and Public Relations Committee Chair: Antonio Martinez

There are many sub-committees that perform the activities of these committees. Some of the activities you may be familiar with like E.coli and benthic monitoring, river clean-up, and organized paddle trips have continued even during this past year of COVID-19 restrictions. However many of our education events were canceled. We feel confident they will continue in the future and we will need your help as a FOMR member to fulfill these activities!

Please contact Kate if you are interested in better understanding and/or volunteering for any of these committees. Kate: info@friendsofthemiddleriver.org, 540-609-8267.

Howl for FOMR

The Sherwood Neighborhood Howlers have been wolf-howling consecutively for over 280 evenings as a show of support for all the essential workers who are pulling our community through this pandemic: medical personnel, teachers, grocery store clerks, trash haulers, police...the list goes on and on. One of FOMR's own, Steve Tally (Dr. Howl) is the group's organizer. Dr. Howl highlights other people, ideas and things to show some love to, in addition to the essential workers. Examples howled for have included: Dr. Fauci, "democracy," local Korean and Viet Nam War casualties and short-eared owls. And now, Steve would like to howl for FOMR!

On Thursday, January 28 at 7pm, FOMR will host a Facebook Live event HERE and we invite you to howl with us at your desk or take your phone outside and howl on your porch!

What will we be howling for? Since our FOMR community is nearly 1000 people strong, we know we have river-loving essential workers and COVID-sufferers in our group. FOMR will be howling for our own. For all of you who are making sacrifices on behalf of the greater community good during this dastardly pandemic. For all you who are suffering from COVID symptoms. We will howl up strength and endurance for all!

Preserving Dark Night Skies

The Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley with support from the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission is hosting a free webinar on outdoor lighting technology on Wednesday, January 27 from 10:30 to 11:30 am. Bob Parks, founder of Smart Outdoor Lighting Alliance will lead the discussion and show new approaches to using lighting as a tool to preserve dark night skies, improved safety and visibility, and energy efficiency within our communities. Mr. Parks has worked extensively throughout Virginia to train and help develop zoning ordinances on community friendly lighting standards. Following the webinar, COVID-friendly walking tours will be scheduled with Mr. Parks to experience firsthand the concepts discussed. Registration is required.
