Second Industrial Fire Causes River Problems

A second industrial fire on Middle River within the past month occurred on Middle River at the manufacturing company, AccuTec.

On Monday, December 4, Friends of the Middle River member and volunteer, George Neighbors, reported seeing oil on the river at his Middle River property and he reported it to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). HERE is the link to the radio report done by Randi B. Hagi at WMRA and here is is the transcript:

"A recent fire at the AccuTec factory in Verona resulted in oily water washing into the Middle River, which the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is monitoring.

According to a report filed with the DEQ, around 12:30 or 1 a.m. on Monday, there was a fire in the grinder operation area at AccuTec, which produces razors and other blades. There were no reported injuries, although two people did go to the hospital as a precaution for smoke inhalation. The fire was caused by a spark in one of the facility's filtration units.

The DEQ's communications office told WMRA that firefighting activities caused oily water to enter a drainage area, which led to a visible sheen downstream in the Middle River. The company has hired a contractor to contain the contamination using oil booms – a type of floating barrier which will 'fence in' the petroleum product. The DEQ continues to monitor the site, and says that currently there are no indications of negative impact on aquatic life. The sheen is 'so light, it will eventually volatilize and dissipate in the river.'"

Drought Assistance for Farmers

FOMR is helping the Alliance for the Shenandoah Valley get word out about assistance to local farmers due to this year's drought.

From the Alliance: "We all know it's been an extremely dry year—rivers are as low as we've seen them in distant memory and wildfires over the last few weeks remind us how drought affects us all.

This year has been particularly difficult and expensive for farmers whose crops and pastures have suffered from the lack of precipitation. Some lost entire crops and many have been forced to rely on much more hay than usual to feed their livestock.

To maintain the rural Valley that we all love, we need farmers to keep farming.

Thankfully, the Farm Service Agency manages a disaster relief program. I want to make you aware of it so you can apply and/or make sure any farmers in your life know that assistance is available.

Livestock farmers in all of the Valley counties (Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Page, Warren and Frederick) qualify for some level of assistance due to the ongoing drought.

Details and applications are available at your local Farm Service Agency office." Download the USDA fact sheet HERE!

Chesapeake Bay ‘Dead Zone’

Shrinks to Smallest on Record

HERE is a recent article by Karl Blankenship of the Augusta Free Press that shares how the water quality in the Chesapeake Bay has drastically improved this year, mostly due to the drought that decreased the runoff of pollution into rivers. This dead zone decline clearly illustrates why it is so important for all Virginians to decrease both the farm and city runoff that flows into the ditches, streams, tributaries and river that lead to the precious Bay.
