On-line Film Fest from Wild Virginia

Wild Virginia is offering another online film festival! The award-winning film Cascade Crossroads along with several other short films that highlight our rivers, streams, and forests and how we can protect them, will be shown. You can watch the films at a time of your choosing on any of three days, Friday, November 12 at 6pm through Sunday, November 14, 6pm. Friends of the Middle River is providing a door prize again for this event--a guided paddle trip for two on Middle River!

"Every 26 seconds – or less – a driver hits an animal, making highways one of the greatest barriers to wildlife movement in the United States," reported by the non-profit ARC (Animal Road Crossings) Solutions . You can read about a local successful solution enacted on Interstate 64 at the story map HERE.

From the film's website: "This is a documentary film about building bridges, both literal and metaphorical. Cascade Crossroads chronicles the amazing story of seemingly opposite interests joining forces to restore a critical wildlife corridor while improving Washington State’s vital transportation corridor over the Cascade Mountains. Told in the varied voices of the men and women who worked across ideological, political, and geographical differences to set in motion the world’s largest wildlife project of its kind, Cascade Crossroads shows what can happen – for people and the environment – when we build bridges."

This Wild Virginia event is free, but donations are encouraged.

Shenandoah Mountain Online Tour

Our friends at Friends of Shenandoah Mountain have put together a terrific new interactive ArcGIS online tool for visualizing the region that is the headwaters for the nearby North River, Briery Branch, Moffett Creek and the Calfpasture Rivers. Sit back with a hot beverage and do some autumn armchair touring HERE!

 E. coli Data Results, October

The Lower Middle River E. coli monitoring results through October continue to be in a healthy range. This is consistent with why the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality took a large portion of this stretch off of the "Impaired Waters" list in 2016. We should be very proud of this!

Climate Change Impact on Stormwater in Virginia

Sarah Volgelsong wrote an article August 20, 2021 for The Virginia Mercury on the changes in Virginia's rainfall due to climate change, entitled "Yes, Virginia, we are seeing more — and more intense — rainfall." From the article:

“'We have seen an uptick in the intensity of rainfall events', said Robert Carey, chief deputy commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). 'Traditionally, that has not been the kind of information that was necessary to be updated frequently.'

Today, that’s no longer true. Culverts, curb inlets, tunnels and other stormwater infrastructure VDOT designs, builds and maintains are being required to handle larger volumes of water in shorter amounts of time.

'It’s intensity, it’s amount, and it’s duration that are important', said VDOT engineer Chris Swanson."

What should Virginia expect as we enter this new climate era? Read the full article HERE.
