Brussels, 06 November 2018; VLIR-UOS has officially joined the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP). As part of the application process, VLIR-UOS has submitted the required documents and agreed to abide by the CBFP members’ cooperation framework in promoting sustainable management of forest ecosystems in Central Africa.

Highlights for Wednesday, 7 November 2018-A 2018 survey of companies in Europe on the impact of the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) timber legality initiative has found that most companies now consider that FLEGT licensing is making it easier to import timber products from Indonesia.
 



The National Forum on Mineral Governance in Cameroon was held from 10 to 11 October 2018, at the Djeuga Palace Hotel in Yaounde. The forum was organized within the framework of the Mines-Environment-Health and Society Project (ProMESS) which is being implemented by FODER with the financial support of the European Union.
 


From 3 to 4 July 2018, the conference hall of Le Paradis hotel’s Chalet Bantu in Kribi hosted a workshop on participatory assessment of transparency in Cameroon’s forestry and environmental sector.



 This volume also feeds into a policy debate between African Union’s nations, citizens, entrepreneurs and researchers. It aims to be part of a new co-operation between countries and regions focused on mutual learning and the preservation of common goods. This report is the result of a partnership between the African Union Commission and the OECD Development Centre.
 


We’re in the process of evolving the Regional Climate Weeks in 2019, so that they more fully realize their objective of mobilizing diverse actors in the public and private sectors around our common goal of addressing climate change.
 


This paper was prepared for the Argentine G20 presidency by World Resources Institute (WRI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a contribution to the Climate Sustainability Working Group. The paper identifies issues that should be considered in the development of long-term strategies.

In August, just before the celebration of World Elephant Day, a big result was achieved for the elephants of Nouabale-Ndoki and the Republic of Congo. Indeed, the country adopted its National Action Plan for Elephants (NAPE), a huge step forward for elephant conservation.




Women’s role in the management of forests and other natural resources can no longer be forgotten or dismissed, said Rosalie Matondo, Minister of Forest Economy in the Republic of the Congo, in a video presented at a panel discussion on women, forestry and ITTO that took place today at the 54th session of International Tropical Timber Council.




On a potholed dirt road cutting through thick sun-dappled foliage, hundreds of miles from the Congolese capital of Kinshasa, the forest is full of people. Young men push rusty bikes through the red dirt, balancing towering bags of charcoal. Women in bright patterned cloth wade in streams in the forest shade, where they let cassava roots — the staple of the Congolese diet — soak for days, sending a pungent odor wafting through the humidity. Batwa men follow scrawny hunting dogs through dense undergrowth, bowstrings taut as they search for an antelope or monkey for dinner.

Rainforest Foundation UK is pleased to share with you ‘At Loggerheads: The Moratorium, Geographical Programming and Community Mapping in DRC’, the third in RFUK’s series of information briefs looking at the policy implications of community mapping in the Congo Basin.



The new study entitled “the Wildlife Trade in Belgium: An Analysis of CITES Trade and Seizure Data”, looks at the trade in species listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. (CITES) and builds on previous studies that identify Belgium as a major destination and transit point for the species, especially moving from Africa to Asia.
 




The sub-regional preparatory workshop for future meetings of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held from 16 to 18 October 2018 at the FRAMOTEL Hotel in Kribi, Cameroon. The workshop was organized by the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), with financial and technical support from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ).

As the position title implies, the PPP Finance Expert’s responsibilities are at the nexus of financial mobilization, financial operations, marketing and analyses in both the private and public sectors, hence requiring a combination of multiple skills to be successful.  The main responsibilities will be the need to maximize the use of tools/instruments employed to manage investment risk in the financial markets with the institutional policy-driven objectives of the AUSIF/AWF.  Furthermore, structuring PPP deals will require balancing transaction/project-specific operational work with policy advocacy, outreach, communications and coordination of events and functions, which implies being able to effectively work with a wide range of methods, procedures and processes.

The Director has overall responsibility for the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Directorate (PERN) and will have the mandate to support the Bank’s Regional Member Countries, and African sub regions, to develop renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean cooking as part of their energy systems – through a combination of public and private sector operations.  The Director will supervise the Division Managers for Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Clean Cooking and Energy Initiatives in this role to (i) promote the development of renewable energy across the African continent and position the Bank as a knowledge and thought leader on renewable energy, (ii) promote energy efficiency along with clean cooking and (iii) implement various initiatives with RMCs, donors and other stakeholders. The EU project "Sustainable wildlife management to improve the living conditions of local communities" seeks an experienced senior scientist for its Lastoursville site, who is committed to rural fieldwork and engagement of local communities in the concerted management of natural resources (hunting and fishing). Your main responsibility will be to implement activities aimed at balancing food security issues with wildlife conservation challenges through sustainable and legal exploitation of wild fauna populations.




The workshop aims at providing participants with the required basic knowledge about CC, CCA and VA, including methodology and tools, focusing largely on the mangroves ecosystem.
