Searching for Scholarships 
Scholarships are one of the best financial aid options available for students that are dedicated to furthering their education. Choosing to apply for scholarships is a great choice for several reasons. Some of the reasons include:
  1. They DO NOT have to be paid back
  2. There are MILLIONS of scholarships available 
  3. They can minimize or completely eliminate the need to take out student loans
  4. The chances that you will find scholarships that match your academic and recreational interest are greatly increased 
  5. There are many resources available to assist with finding scholarships (i.e. books, the internet, your TRiO Upward Bound/Talent Search Coordinator, school counselors, teachers, university financial aid offices, etc.)
Types of Scholarships 

Scholarships are broken down into many different categories. Here are a few of the categories you may come across during your search: 

*need-based scholarships (based on financial need) 
*merit-based scholarships (based on academic excellence) *unique/weird scholarships 
*athletic scholarships
*scholarships for minorities 
*scholarships for military personnel (and their children) 
*corporate scholarships
*art scholarships 
*community service scholarships 
*religious scholarships

...and many more!   
There Are Scholarships for What?!
Did you know that there are scholarships awarded for: 
  • Being exceptionally tall
  • Being left-handed
  • Being exceptionally short
  • Duck calling
  • Zombie Apocalypse escape plans
  • Underwater Photography
  • Being a vegetarian 
  • Being a multiple birth child (i.e. twin or triplet)

In addition to applying for scholarships online, be sure to utilize other resources near you. If you are having difficulty finding or applying for scholarships, ask your TRiO Upward Bound or Talent Search Coordinator for assistance. 

Scholarships for Minorities 
Scholarships for minority students are intended to assist students of diverse backgrounds fund their education. Scholarships for minority students often target, but are not limited to the following groups:

  1. African American students 
  2. Hispanic/Latino American students
  3. Asian American students
  4. Native American students 
  5. Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students
  6. LGBTQ students
  7. Women
