Where There's A Will, There's A Way
College is expensive, but there are things you can do to cut down the overall cost of college. Here are a few tips that can help you save a few bucks.
Before You Enroll
  • Use a net price calculator to estimate the total cost of your degree program (i.e. tuition, books, housing, etc.)
  • Apply for FAFSA
  • Apply for Scholarships, grants, and federal work study
  • Avoid taking out many student loans if possible
  • Consider taking AP courses during high school (passing the AP Exam will allow you to forego taking that course again in college)
  • Consider attending a junior college for the first 2 years in order to take your general education requirement courses
  • Consider attending a college in your current state (going to college out of state is generally more expensive)
  • Ask your colleges of interest if they offer tuition waivers
While You're On Campus
  • Consider your housing options: having a roommate can be cheaper than living alone
  • Review your meal plan: save money by purchasing a smaller meal plan if you find yourself rarely using the university dining hall
  • Avoid applying for various credit cards: credit card offers will come from everywhere, don't fall for their enticing "special offers"
  • Consider using campus transportation: this will help save a ton of money on parking and gas
  • Don't be so quick to buy new textbooks: many of the books at your university will be available on sites like amazon.com and chegg.com for a fraction of the cost.
  • Aim to graduate on time to avoid spending more money on tuition than necessary
