Subject: The Need for a Modern Worship Reformation

Dear families,

During the Middle Ages, certain acts of worship and religious observance within many churches were reserved for the clergy, while congregants were left to watch and wonder at what was going on. Reformers arose who recognized the errors and began taking steps to align worship more closely with what the Bible, and not tradition, prescribed.

In this Message of the Month, Scott Aniol explains three medieval worship errors: a belief that the sacraments are the way of salvation, a dependency upon the priests as mediators between God and man, and a preoccupation with sensory experiences. Scott states that “What was supposed to be all of God’s people worshiping the Lord became simply the worship of the clergy.”
What is the key to a worship reformation? Actively and unashamedly submitting ourselves to the sufficient authority of the Word of God in our worship. As we align our worship with the pattern laid out in the New Testament, we worship God in Spirit and in Truth.
