Subject: Our Maintenance Team Needs Your Help!

Dear Friend,

I would like to introduce you to the world of Mark Schmucker who graduated from our Residential Program exactly 15 years ago. Ever since then he has overseen our maintenance department. If you’ve met Mark, you would probably be struck by his humility and kindness. Let me tell you though, this is a far cry from the angry, self-centered man who came to us all those years ago. He is just one example of the many radical transformations God has worked in this place over the years.

Pure Life Ministries houses 60-70 students and 40 staff members at any given time. That requires a lot of housing. Over the years, the Lord has enabled us to purchase seven properties, which includes three dormitories, two office buildings, two shops, the student center, and fourteen staff houses. The administration office alone is 7,500 square feet! Every one of these buildings have water heaters, appliances and, of course, HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.

Mark Schmucker’s call in life is to keep all of this operating smoothly, knowing that over a hundred people depend on him. This is no small matter! Every day he and his guys have what seems like a thousand details to stay on top of.

For instance, we just went through a very difficult three-week cold snap here, with temperatures dropping down to near zero. Weather like that brings a host of problems beyond all the normal maintenance issues. Yet, every day Mark and his team were out at all times of day or night shoveling snow, fixing pipes and making sure everything was properly operating. Bad weather or not, there is always a myriad of problems plaguing him such as refrigerators not working, light bulbs burning out, door knobs coming loose and so on.

One of the larger projects requiring his attention right now is the blacktop paving at our Residential campus, some of which has cracked and broken up over the years. He estimates it will cost at least $125,000 to have it repaved.

All told, the major projects our facilities team will be working on this year will cost the ministry around $300,000. This is partially because, as our facilities age, more and more “big-ticket” issues arise. Maintaining all of these buildings can be a pain, but being able to house our staff probably saves us a half a million dollars a year!

Pure Life Maintenance Team

I share all of this with you because I know that many of you are very supportive of the work that goes on at Pure Life Ministries. With that in mind, I would like to ask you to consider giving financially to these needs and to keep Mark and his guys in your prayers.

And there is one other thing I would like to mention. We are going to host a special two-day work weekend on Friday and Saturday, June 5th & 6th. Mark is especially interested in guys with experience in concrete, painting, siding, framing and maintenance. We could get a lot done and really knock down his huge to-do list if we could get some help! Housing will be available for those who would like to help but don’t live nearby. We will also have meals for all.

Regardless if you get involved with any of this or not, I want to personally thank you for your prayers, support, and the love you have shown for us over the years. This ministry has now been operating for 40 years, and I am continuously amazed at all that people have done to keep us going! So thank you very much for all your help!

Love in Christ,

Steve Gallagher,

President
