I have been ministering to professing Christians in sexual sin for nearly four decades now. During that time, I’ve come to recognize a subtle yet powerful lie that I believe has played a role in keeping thousands of people enslaved. It is the notion that they can overcome their addiction without any major disruption to their life. It just isn’t true.
What is true is that their addiction has been birthed in an incubator of carnality and worldliness. A man can spend nine months in the Pure Life Ministries Residential Program and have a wonderful encounter with God. He can be set free of the hold of the sexual sin that has gripped his heart. But if he returns home and resumes the same carnal lifestyle he lived before, it will only be a matter of time before he “returns to wallow in the mire” (2 Peter 2:22).
There is only one way to true freedom from sexual sin, and it is found in an unconditional surrender to Jesus Christ and complete submission to His authority. We must allow Him to have the latitude to govern our entire lives, not merely our moral issues.
This is why we tell those who come to us for help that they must redefine the way they do life. They need to rethink everything! I’ve noticed that the guys who really live out a victorious life are the ones who transfer the godly lifestyle they have lived at Pure Life into their lives back home. It is sort of like transplanting Pure Life right into their living rooms!
And what a blessing it is to me personally when I encounter one of these guys years after they’ve graduated the Residential Program and see them living a full and joyful life in the Lord. The sexual sin with all its awful consequences is no longer present!
Well, I thought I would share with you because it is one of those things that we face here at Pure Life on a regular basis.
On a more practical note, I’ll mention one of the projects we are looking to complete in the weeks ahead. I think you know that with the financial help many of you have shared, we have been able to provide quality, Amish-made furniture in all of the dorms here. Sinking down into an overused, worn out couch after a hard day’s work can be pretty demoralizing so this new furniture has been a real blessing to our students.
We have just a little bit more work to do to finalize this upgrade to the program. This will include remodeling two bedrooms, replacing old blinds and doors, installing new lighting and applying new paint. We anticipate the total costs for this new interior redesign to be around $12,700.
