Hi Friend,
Trauma and PTSD are linked with chronic illness through so many different studies, from the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) data to the potential impact of becoming chronically ill and the development of trauma or PTSD from living with it.
Every single client I have worked with who has chronic illness, has had one of more instances of trauma, even if they were not aware that they had it.
This is because when we tend to think of trauma, we think of big, catastrophic or violent experiences.
That is not what causes most trauma.
You can become traumatised through things like:
- Being constantly criticised, judged or put down.
- Feeling silenced, ignored or powerless.
- Feeling responsible for other peoples emotions, experiences or moods.
- Not feeling loved or approved of or not feeling like you are enough.
- Medical gaslighting.
- Medical procedures, surgeries or serious side affects to medication or treatments.
- Bullying.
- Experiencing toxic shame or guilt.
This is just the tip of the iceberg Friend.
In episode 5 of the Emotional Autoimmunity podcast, I delve into the research findings, explain why unresolved trauma and PTSD can have such a profound affect on our illness and potential healing and unpack why you need to take it seriously.
You can listen over on the blog by clicking on the image below.
In the the show notes there are links to the ACE self test so you can get your ACE score and find out more about what it means, plus links to the research I mention.
