New hair, definitely do care!
Hey Friend.

I hope this email finds you as well as can be expected, given all you have going on right now.

Chronic illness is always throwing us a curve ball or two (or three) so that makes celebrating the little wins even more important.

I had one of those wins yesterday and I wanted to share it with you because I know you will get it.

I got my hair cut for my usual 6 week trim but also decided to get some colour added in. Here in Australia we call it "getting foils" so I had a half head of foils done and chose dark brown and a very bright copper.

Getting highlights (foils) is my autoimmune compromise as the colour goes on the hair in the foil (aluminium) and not on the scalp, so out of the colouring options, it feels a little better for me.

But as she was applying all the little foil pockets of colour, my hairdresser remarked "well, you certainly have a lot of hair, don't you" which brought a big smile to my face because yes, right now I do have a lot of hair, thank you very much.

I've had diffuse hair loss twice with chronic illness.

The first time with Hashimoto's where I was shedding hair literally everywhere! Picking it off my clothes, seeing in on the bathroom floor, the chair I had been sitting in, even the kitchen bench top.

Over all I lost over 50% of my hair volume and could see my scalp showing through and my then long hair looked so lank and thin and horrible that I got my first pixie cut because I couldn't stand it any longer.

My slow descent into type 1 diabetes and my first hospitalisation into the ICU was the second time I lost my hair and it felt just as heartbreaking as the very first time and again, I got my hair cut short to live with it.

Now though, it's a choice to keep my hair cut short, not an attempt to hide the sad and sorry state of my thinning hair.

I love how easy it is to style and look after and now that I have a hairdresser who really knows how to do a great short cut, I feel it really suits me.

There are so many, many losses and griefs with chronic illness, so if hair loss is one of yours, I know how you feel and I send you so much love and hope that one day soon, a hairdresser tells you how much better your hair is looking these days.
