How many times have you let one person’s words, silence, attitude, or behavior decide whether you were going to have a good day?
That is how a grievance works. It convinces you that your happiness is in somebody else’s hands. It says, “I can’t feel okay until they apologize. I can’t relax until they change. I can’t be free until this situation looks different.” That may feel normal, but it's rooted in fear. It puts your happiness in the hands of a body, a personality, an ego, or a circumstance that you do not control.
That’s what A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 72 is helping you look at: “Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation.” In plain language, every time you hold on to a grievance, you are saying, “If this person, this situation, this body, this money, or this past were different, then I could be happy.” And the Course is telling you that the ego’s plan will never give you the peace you want.
Love gives you another way. Love does not ask you to deny what happened. Love asks you to stop making another person responsible for your happiness. A grievance says, “They have power over me.” Forgiveness says, “I can choose again.”
You’ll never experience true freedom until you understand your true Identity and step into the limitless power that is rightfully yours.
If you’d like support applying the Course instead of just thinking about it, I invite you to connect with me through Clarity Sessions, Coaching & Mentoring, or the Mighty Companions Miracle Community. With nearly 50 years of experience practicing and teaching A Course in Miracles, I can help you see situations differently, use Course principles in daily life, and stay supported through live gatherings, Study Guide Journals, unlisted playlists, the Language of Love Glossary, and exclusive workshops.
This week, choose one grievance that has been running through your mind. Don’t pick the easy one. Pick the one you keep justifying.
Ask yourself:
Who or what am I making responsible for my happiness?
What am I waiting for them to do before I let myself feel free?
What fear am I making more real than love right now?
You don’t have to force forgiveness. You don’t have to pretend you are not upset. Just become willing to see how much power you have given away.
Your happiness is not being held hostage by them.
It is waiting for your willingness to choose again.
