Induction and Beyond

March 2021 I Monthly Educator Resources

A message from TR@TC...

Usually, we look at March with the hopeful eyes of spring, anticipating new beginnings, and the blossoming of new life all around us. This year is no different, and yet this year not the same. March marks a year since we entered this “twilight zone” of hybrid learning, remote working, and endless zoom calls. Over the past 12 months, many have experienced varying degrees of loss, grief, and dissociation. However, this has also been a time of deep introspection, collective growth, inspiration, and newfound interdependence.

March may look different for each of us, but one thing is certain:

We are all ready for spring!

As we enter this last winter month, we invite you to consider how filling your cup will benefit those around you. In the following, we share a variety of resources that we hope will support your practice, and that of other members in your school community.

Yours in appreciation,

Julissa Diloné

Looking to transfer to a new NYCDOE school?

The Open Market Hiring System (OMT)(Open external link) is open annually from April through August. Current teachers and other employees in eligible UFT-titles, who are either in active service or on an approved leave, are eligible to use it to seek transfers to different schools. You must submit applications for new schools using the process indicated on the new schools site, which also offers information on the new schools, positions, application process and selection criteria.

Note: If you've been out of NYC and are looking to return to the NYCDOE, you may need to complete the New Teacher Finder Application, which can be found here.

The New York Performance Standards Consortium was founded two decades ago on the belief that there was a better way to assess student learning than dependence upon standardized testing.

Instead of basing a student’s future on a one-day (or two- or three-day) test, an assessment system should reflect a fuller picture of what students know and can do.

The Consortium’s system is based on in-depth literacy, mathematical problem-solving, application of the scientific method, social studies research, a span of mediums for exhibiting learning, and a chance for students to have a voice and proud ownership of their work.

Raising Consciousness

Teacher burnout is real and the pandemic has surely solidified this notion. Teachers and school leaders have been pulled and stretched into every direction, as they continue to "table their trauma" and hold space for the grief of their students and families. The following article, shared by alumna Kathleen Boyle, provides some helpful insight into the unique challenges we are currently facing, and how this is affecting school communities.

Teachers Are Caring More Than Ever. Here Are 4 Ways to Care for Them

"Teachers have always been caregivers, but the coronavirus has thrust them into the role of first responders for children and families navigating a crisis. Our research suggests the additional weight of care is taking a heavy toll. We research education in crisis situations and how schools can support social and emotional well-being, and since March, we have been interviewing elementary school teachers in a diverse, midwestern, suburban school district about their experiences with remote learning. We have been struck by the immense weight of care that these teachers are shouldering during the pandemic as well as their commitment to bearing it with grace...." read full article

Learn to apply the concepts from Gary Chapman's bestselling "The Five Love Languages" book to the classroom with this unique guide to connecting "love language" research with the classroom. The eight included lessons are scripted, and include an objective and "anticipatory set" and teaching/preparation.

EXPERT FROM SYNOPSIS:  In the decades since, Marc has led large research teams and raised tens of millions of dollars to investigate the roots of emotional well-being. His prescription for healthy children (and their parents, teachers, and schools) is a system called RULER, a high-impact and fast-effect approach to understanding and mastering emotions that has already transformed the thousands of schools that have adopted it.

Idea for Advisory: For the Love of Creativity and Healing "...As an artist, I’d love to say I already possessed a daily creative practice. I didn’t. And when there is trauma, sadness, anxiety or the face of what seems like a perpetual unknown, inspiration is hard to come by. But creativity is healing...Getting my hands messy in paint or clay, glue and paper, and various other mediums brought a tactile physical and emotional healing. Art had been both my cry for help and salvation...I’ve recently turned to it again. In need of self-expression and ways of reminding myself that there is hope on the other side of this... In this 8×10 paper journal, I face conflict within myself, offer encouragement to myself, express love and joy, work out thoughts and experiment with new ideas. It’s both visual artistic expression and a highly personal journal..." ~ Jeannette Miller

EXPERT FROM SYNOPSIS:

The folklore that has shaped our dominant culture teems with frightening female creatures. In our language, in our stories (many written by men), we underline the idea that women who step out of bounds--who are angry or greedy or ambitious, who are overtly sexual or not sexy enough--aren't just outside the norm. They're unnatural. Monstrous. But maybe, the traits we've been told make us dangerous and undesirable are actually our greatest strengths....read more

Jazz Jennings is one of the youngest and most prominent voices in the national discussion about gender identity. At the age of five, Jazz transitioned to life as a girl, with the support of her parents. A year later, her parents allowed her to share her incredible journey in her first Barbara Walters interview, aired at a time when the public was much less knowledgeable or accepting of the transgender community...read more

The Popol Vuh is a wonderfully visual story that tells of two Hero Twins that must play ball with the Lords of the Underworld in order to save humanity. • Examination of the Hero’s Journey within pre hispanic literature and its importance for young people.

  • Appreciation of the value of pre hispanic mythology and its significance in education.

Creative Alchemy: Writing from Where You Are

Creativity is not a luxury. From the global pandemic to racial injustice and police brutality, we are living at a unique moment in history that has had a profound effect on us all individually, and as a society. In this workshop, we will use embodied practices, including breathing, sound meditation, and movement to quiet the inner critic, calm the nervous system, and open the creative channel. From that place we will explore generative writing prompts designed to alchemize your emotions and experiences into creative expression. You will leave this workshop more deeply connected to your own authentic creative voice and ready to share that with your classroom and communities.

Consider joining this session to learn how you can bring this work into your own curriculum.

Our Credit Improvement Pilot Series kicked off with a foundational learning session, in which Financial Coach, Johanny Pinales, helped us define credit and begin to understand how it works in our society. This week, we'll dive deeper and begin to apply our understanding through the review of an anonymous credit report. Click here to reserve your spot.
