Induction and Beyond

April 2021 I Monthly Educator Resources

A message from TR@TC...

We hope you've been able to carve out some time to relax, reflect, and rejuvenate yourselves over spring recess. And, as we enter this final quarter of the school year, we encourage you to consider what how you'd like to close out the year with your students and what steps you need to take in order to make that intention a reality.

To that end, in the following we offer resources to continue supporting your instructional practice, social justice endeavors, and the mental and physical well-being of your school community.

Yours in appreciation,

Julissa Diloné

Looking to transfer to a new NYCDOE school?

The Open Market Hiring System (OMT) is open annually from April through August. Current teachers and other employees in eligible UFT-titles, who are either in active service or on an approved leave, are eligible to use it to seek transfers to different schools. You must submit applications for new schools using the process indicated on the new schools site, which also offers information on the new schools, positions, application process and selection criteria.

Note: If you've been out of NYC and are looking to return to the NYCDOE, you may need to complete the New Teacher Finder Application, which can be found here.

The New York Performance Standards Consortium was founded two decades ago on the belief that there was a better way to assess student learning than dependence upon standardized testing.

Instead of basing a student’s future on a one-day (or two- or three-day) test, an assessment system should reflect a fuller picture of what students know and can do.

The Consortium’s system is based on in-depth literacy, mathematical problem-solving, application of the scientific method, social studies research, a span of mediums for exhibiting learning, and a chance for students to have a voice and proud ownership of their work.

Raising Consciousness

A horrifying and heart wrenching surge in violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) is happening across the US. It is our responsibility, as educators, to not only condemn hate but to stand in solidarity with the people and organizations that uplift and protect Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. To that end, we are sharing the following resources.

Asians 4 Antiracism

The following comes from a page that was created by 2 NYC teens who have dedicated their time and energy to supporting others in educating themselves and sharing collective resources for the AAPI community. Click on the link above to learn more about them and the work they do.

Awesome way to wrap up and review the end of the semester or large unit! 100% interactive and the perfect way to get students engaged. Insert tons of links that are ascetically pleasing, rather than a huge list on a doc.

This past March, during our monthly Induction PD Meeting, we had the honor and privilege of connecting with Enmanuel Candelario and Frantz Jerome of The Peace Poets and The Brotherhood Sister Sol artist collectives. During this time, Enmanuel and Frantz shared with us a healing centered curriculum that was collaboratively developed by the aforementioned organizations. We encourage you to watch the video and connect with Enmanuel to learn more about how you can bring this curriculum to your classrooms, this poetry month (and any other time of the year).

Idea for Advisory: For the Love of Creativity and Healing "...As an artist, I’d love to say I already possessed a daily creative practice. I didn’t. And when there is trauma, sadness, anxiety or the face of what seems like a perpetual unknown, inspiration is hard to come by. But creativity is healing...Getting my hands messy in paint or clay, glue and paper, and various other mediums brought a tactile physical and emotional healing. Art had been both my cry for help and salvation...I’ve recently turned to it again. In need of self-expression and ways of reminding myself that there is hope on the other side of this... In this 8×10 paper journal, I face conflict within myself, offer encouragement to myself, express love and joy, work out thoughts and experiment with new ideas. It’s both visual artistic expression and a highly personal journal..." ~ Jeannette Miller
