TR@TC Induction Weekly

"Food for the brain, body, and soul"

Week of March 22nd, 2021

Dear Alumni, Partners, and Friends,

Our thoughts are with the Asian communities impacted by the current wave of anti-Asian acts, in particular, those connected with the horrifying shooting spree in three Atlanta-area spas, that killed eight people, including six Asian women.

As you are determining how to hold space for your students to discuss their feelings and ask questions about this topic, we offer the following resources and hope you find them supportive of your practice:

*Visit WWW.Morningsidecenter.org for many more resources, tips, and suggested teaching strategies

As always, should you have any questions, comments, or contributions, please don't hesitate to reach out to us at teaching.residents@tc.columbia.edu.

With sincere gratitude for all you do,

Julissa DiLoné

Winter Wellness Series

March closes off our winter wellness offerings, and we are so very excited be able to bring you the following community building workshops, through partnerships with various BIPOC facilitators and Success In Motion.

Note: Mindful Monday, Workout Wednesday, and Transformation Thursday workshops happen on a weekly basis.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

NYC Special Educator Martha St. Jean has been holding space teachers, administrators, and paraprofessionals of color seeking partnership and discussion on how they are getting through the 2020 - 20201 school year during the coexisting pandemics of racial injustice and COVID-19. During these trying times how do we help keep one another from giving up? How do we keep ourselves from giving up?

As we go into Winter Recess we will use the music of Solange Knowles to explore what it means to create boundaries. What are the purposeful practices we can use to renew our strength and engage constructively and productively in the gendered and racialized conflict we are encountering during these trying times. What does it mean to practice self-care using pedagogy that acknowledges history and the present pandemics? During this inquiry-based conversation educators and other interested parties will reorient themselves to practices promoting actionable knowledge.

Join us on Wednesday, March 24th at 6:00 pm EST. Please attend if you have the space, and share with a friend (or several)

Whether you're an educator who is integrating financial literacy into content core curriculum, or someone who is working on deepening your personal financial literacy, the Credit Improvement Series will support your endeavors. We are thrilled to be able to partner with Financial Coach, Johanny Pinales, as she guides us in understanding our credit scores and developing an action plan that will improve and/or sustain "A Balanced Future."

Join Professor Jaime Arredondo, as he tells the story of the Popol Vuh and shares his rich and vibrantly colorful illustrations!

This story is especially relevant to teachers looking to invites additional and lesser known perspectives into "The Hero's Journey," which is often a topic covered in ELA and Social Studies units. We urge you to take part in this learning experience, in the spirit of authentically affirming and validating the rich cultural capital of your diverse student populations.

The Popol Vuh is a wonderfully visual story that tells of two Hero Twins that must play ball with the Lords of the Underworld in order to save humanity. Known as the oldest body of literature in the Americas it survived burnings, censorship, and over one thousand years in the making. Its appeal is felt by many, young and old, and offers profound lessons especially in these challenging times”.

Teachers will leave these sessions with...

  • Understanding of profound lessons offered in the Popol Vuh for today’s world and classroom.

  • Examination of the Hero’s Journey within pre hispanic literature and its importance for young people.

  • Appreciation of the value of pre hispanic mythology and its significance in education.

Promoting Teacher Endeavors

We are thrilled to be able to support educators who are engaged in wellness practices outside of TC. This month, we learned about Joanne Edmonson a NYC elementary school teacher who has taken COVID-Era fitness to another level and is supporting many women in doing the same. Learn more about her through the interview linked here. In the meantime, check out some of the weekly offerings from her network.
