Induction and Beyond

March 2022 I Educator Resources

A message from TR@TC...

February 1st, 2022 marked the beginning of several days of the celebration of Lunar New Year in China and other parts of Asia. The holiday kicks off with the New Moon, which is also said to be a great time to set intentions.

As we enter the Year of the Tiger, we invite you to set your intentions for the remainder of the school year and consider how your students engage in this work with you. To that end, we offer a few questions that may support you in this process:

  • What brings you joy and fulfillment?

  • Where do you need to say "no" in order to make space for more things that bring you joy and fulfillment?

  • Who can support you in this process?

Yours in appreciation,

Julissa DiLoné & Jazlyn Sanchez

March 23 (6:30-8:30 pm EST) — Teaching Mathematics with Compassion

Featuring Geillan Aly, Ph.D.

In this talk, Dr. Geillan Aly will introduce the Compassionate Math Framework, which attempts to address a significant need in mathematics education, namely that learning mathematics is both an emotional and intellectual act. The goal for Compassionate Math is to help teachers work through or around the emotional challenges of learning and teaching math so that their students can be their best mathematical selves. The idea is to bring the affective (emotional) side of learning math to the forefront, a side that is all too often forgotten. This includes thinking about how anxiety and identity affect our efficacy as teachers, especially through the lens of equity and social justice, and how that contributes to limiting our mathematical achievements. In this talk, Dr. Aly will share the Compassionate Math Framework and lead teachers through newly designed reflective exercises to help them tap into the emotional struggles they and their students encounter while learning or teaching mathematics.

April 13 (6:30-8:30 pm EST) — Engaging with Social and Political Themes in Computer / Data Science Education

Featuring Sarah Van Wart, Ph.D.

Educators are regularly called upon to help students make sense of their technologically mediated worlds. This involves helping students to “think computationally,” write code, and/or gather and analyze data. This also (increasingly) involves helping them consider the broader social and political impacts of these technologies and methods. In this talk, Dr. Sarah Van Wart will describe a few different approaches that she has taken – citizen science, civic advocacy, and app prototyping – to help young people engage with problems that are at the same time technical, social, and political. Dr. Van Wart will also share resources that have been helpful as she has tried to figure out how to balance these themes in her own teaching practice.

Raising Consciousness

In honor of Women’s history month, this March TR@TC would like to bring light to a lot of extraordinary resources that showcase the progress we have made as a whole in supporting women achievements throughout the years. As many may know, women around the world have persevered through mistreatment and oppression amongst their positionally, gender role and socioeconomic status. Below are some resources we've picked out for you!

Respect Her Crank!: Sounds of Blackness

Explores the roles of Black women in American music history through weekly virtual workshops in music production, songwriting, graphic design, and surprise workshops from community partners. The workshops are tailored for educators (but open to all) on Tuesdays and exclusively for teens on Thursdays, occurring February–June 2021.

6 Lesson Plan Resources for Teachers

Women's March: The mission of Women’s March is to harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change. Women’s March is a women-led movement providing intersectional education on a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for new grassroots activists & organizers to engage in their local communities through trainings, outreach programs and events. Women’s March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect.

The Florestine Perrault Collins (1895-1988): Photographer Florestine Perrault Collins navigated the social expectations of her gender and race to give visibility to Black women in New Orleans. She was one of only 101 Black female photographers recorded in the 1920 U.S. census and, unlike her male counterparts, often focused on women and children in a domestic setting. Florestine prioritized the dignity and pride of her subjects and tried to produce portraits that would accurate represent her clients’ individuality.
