Induction and Beyond

February 2022 I Educator Resources

A message from TR@TC...

While we traditionally celebrate Black History in February, we want to echo Black Lives Matter at Schools and encourage you to commit to a year in which you are intentionally centering the contributions of the African diaspora in meaningful ways. We hope the resources and professional learning we’ve curated below support you in this practice.

On a related note, please remember to scroll down to the wellness section for a variety of teacher-centered workshops meant to support you in filling your cup with wellness this winter.

Yours in appreciation,

Julissa DiLoné & Jazlyn Sanchez

Induction Highlights

This month, we want to highlight TR@TC's Class of 2021. We celebrate them as the first TR@TC cohort to be dual-certified in a content area plus special education. To quote some of our school leadership partners: "These are the pedagogical unicorns we need right now!"

We know this has been a challenging start to the year and are inspired by the ways in which you have supported each other and your school communities in getting through it. While you're getting acclimated, here are a few things you'll want to remember to do this winter.

1. Meet with your Chapter Leader (NYCDOE and Non-DOE) and learn more about your UFT benefits

2. Register for a Tenure PD with the DOE or meet with your Charter school's Talent Management Team

3. Set up your TRS account and begin contributing to your pension plan's QPP and TDA  or sign up for your Charters School's retirement plan (401k, etc...)

4. Visit Uft.org and create your profile, check out employee discounts, and learn about professional development offerings.

5. Get your UFT ID Card

Raising Consciousness

Black Lives Matter at School is a national coalition of educators organizing for racial justice in education. Each year, during the week of action, thousands of educators across the country participate to affirm the lives of Black students. Educators teach lessons about structural racism, Black history, and anti-racist movements during the week of action and beyond.

Visit their website for resources to support you in planning for the BLM at Schools week of action and the year of purpose initiatives.

Make Units More Inspiring with Vision Boards by Amanda Cardenas: Learn more about this idea and check out Amanda's and Marie Morris' podcast here!

In 2019 we partnered with Success in Motion DEI division to pilot a racial literacy course within our residency program. What was unique about our structure was that it integrated wellness based practices to support our pre-service teachers in doing the emotional work that is a part of what we must do alone, in affinity, and across affinity (Peters, 2012) to increase our cultural competency. To that end, we have included the following in the wellness section as a reminder to take time to also process your emotions and seek therapeutic support as needed.

As NYC teachers return to in-person teaching, our wellness partner, Success In Motion, continues to offer teacher wellness that is responsive to their scheduling needs. Check out the February updates and be sure to join the team for VIRTUAL Restorative Yoga, Cardio, and Stress Management!

Sign up for sessions ONLINE or by downloading the Success In Motion App.

Go to the "Open To All Educators" tab and select the session you wish to attend.
