Induction Highlights

Part of our mission in Induction is to support our experienced teachers in enhancing their professional standing and financial wellbeing by offering targeted workshops, creating platforms for them to showcase their talents, and 1:1 teacher leadership coaching.

This month, our hearts smile as we share the news of another TR@TC alumni attaining the prestigious National Board Certification. Vincent Pham, you make us proud and we are so excited for all the doors this certification will open for you!

On a related note, we would also like to thank Devon Hedrick-Shaw, who was the first TR@TC alumni to become National Board Certified and later led the workshops that have supported other alumni in pursuing this milestone.

Honorable mentions: Yesenia Moreno and Peggy McQuaid - Congrats on getting National Board Certified!

Teacher As Activist

A message from the Debt Collective: Join us for our Cancel ALL student loan debt week of action, Jan 17 - 23, with actions around the country! We’ll be holding events to demand that President Biden use this authority -- and do it now. Enter your zipcode to find your local event or to organize your own!

Urge Your Members of Congress to Cosponsor Educators for America Act

To address the teacher shortage our nation faces, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) and Rep. Alma Adams (D-NC) introduced the Educators for America Act with the input of experts like you in the field of educator preparation. The legislation is almost two years in the making. The bill will “build the capacity of educator preparation programs to ensure all students have access to profession-ready educators; recruit new and diverse educators into the profession; invest in partnership between higher education, state and local partners, and support innovation to meet the changing needs of students.”

Educator Grant Opportunities

Alumni Grants are back!

This year, we are able to support Five, $200 grants for alumni who have fulfilled their agreement to serve.

Note: You do not need to be a classroom teacher to apply for these, but must be working in an education related field and demonstrate use of funds in support of K-12 classrooms or teacher learning.

Please email jad2222@tc.columbia.edu to discuss your options and other requirements.

Teachers Supporting Teachers

As our alumni network continues to grow in their practice (#11years!) we want to work towards identifying ways to support them in sharing their education-based entrepreneurial endeavors. To that end, in this and upcoming newsletters, we will share resources to support you in your endeavors, while highlighting alumni teacher-preneurs.

If you would like for us to share about your education-based business, please email jad2222@tc.colubmia.edu to discuss further.

This resource was brought to us by veteran teacher, instructional coach, and education entrepreneur, Amy Nelson. Check out their services, which run the gamut of school-based to business coaching workshops.

Edu Coach is the brainchild of Dr. Gina Tucker, former student of TR@TC founder, Dr.Lin Goodwin. Through this innovative platform, she not only seeks to connect teachers with high quality instructional support, but to also enable veteran teacher coaches to share their expertise outside geographical constraints. Visit the site to learn more about this future-based resource and/or determine if you'd like to add yourself to the team of trailblazers who have joined the EduCoach team.

This workshop is designed to support administrators and hiring managers in learning best practices to recruit, hire, and retain Black teachers for their schools.

In this experiential session, participants will be guided to gain a deeper understanding of the historical and current context of Black teachers’ work and their impact on the thriving of all students.

Attendees will assess their current hiring intentions and efforts and learn to use an equity lens to implement more effective practices. This is an interactive session where you will engage in thought partnership and receive feedback from other participants in multiple breakout rooms.

Save The Date: January 27th, 2022

The struggle for educational equality and social justice remains a central feature of leading both suburban and urban schools and districts in the U.S. As race and class divides continue to widen and public support for diversity and inclusion in schools wane, the work of educational leaders committed to equity and justice remains fraught with complexity and contradictions. This event, hosted by the Black Education Research Collective (BERC) at Teachers College, Columbia University will feature Professor Sonya Douglass Horsford, Founding Director of BERC, in conversation with Chancellor Lester Young, Jr. New York Board of Regents, and incoming Chancellor David Banks, New York City Department of Education as they discuss the future of education leadership and policy in New York and beyond.
