Induction and Beyond

May 2022 I Educator Resources

A message from TR@TC...

Spring is full of light and new beginnings; the days are lasting longer and we find ourselves in the midst of celebration and recognition. This May is full of celebrations, including the celebration of mothers all over the world for Mother's Day as well as the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration in Puebla, Mexico. Alongside these celebrations, this month we are also focusing on recognizing the importance of Mental Health Awareness as well as honoring those who have served in the U.S armed forces on Memorial Day.

In order to cultivate unity, social awareness, and appreciation, we have curated the following resources to enlighten you all on these topics.

Yours in appreciation,

Jazlyn Sanchez

Raising Consciousness

What does Cinco de Mayo really stand for?

For those who wish to be enlightened, Cinco de Mayo is the celebration to commemorate Mexico's victory against the French Empire in the battle of Puebla. Puebla is currently one of the thirty-two states in Mexico. The holiday is celebrated through parades and parties as well as some other traditions. Some of these traditions include mariachi music, traditional Mexican folk dancing, and dishes such as tacos and mole poblano.

Summer Learning Opportunities

The Battery Conservancy

  • Staff-Led Field-Trips: "On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays this spring, we welcome full classes to visit The Battery for 75-minute field trips led by our education staff.  We offer a range of lesson topics for these trips; explore our offerings and sign up for a slot at the link above.  After your field trip, stick around the park to enjoy our brand new Playscape!"

  • Self-Guided Field Trips: "We provide a lesson plan and materials so you can bring your class to the park on your own schedule.  Elementary age groups will explore the ecology of the park through the lens of changing seasons on our Spring at The Battery walk, and older groups can choose between walks that relate to History, Public Green Space, or the Food System.  Sign up for a slot at the link above."

Stewardship Lab: "If you work with an elective class or after-school club and would like to set up recurring visits to the Battery Urban Farm, please join our Stewardship Lab program. Stewardship Lab groups visit weekly or every other week, working directly with our staff to maintain our public green space and grow food for donation to local food relief organizations.  Activities include the planting and harvest of our vegetable and forest farms, with opportunities to monitor the ecological health of our terrestrial and marine ecosystems.  Time commitments are flexible depending on group needs, and we can work with you to tailor the focus of each trip toward content that is most useful to you.  Available April through October; ideal for Middle and High School groups.  If you are interested in participating in this program, please fill out the Stewardship Lab interest form."
