Induction and Beyond

April 2022 I Educator Resources

A message from TR@TC...

In April there is a lot going on, from the beginning of Ramadan (4/2), the beginning of Passover (4/15), and Easter (4/17), many people around the world are engaged in fasting, prayer and celebration. In addition to this, most K-12 schools are also celebrating Poetry Month and Earth Day. Overall, April is a month that reminds us that even in times of grief, conflict and struggle, if we stay grounded in the blessings that surround us, we can foster hope and resilience within ourselves and within our communities.

With that in mind, we have curated resources centered on raising consciousness, enhancing your practice, and fostering connection within all cultural communities.

Yours in appreciation,

Julissa DiLoné & Jazlyn Sanchez

April 13 (6:30-8:30 pm EST) — Engaging with Social and Political Themes in Computer / Data Science Education

Featuring Sarah Van Wart, Ph.D.

Educators are regularly called upon to help students make sense of their technologically mediated worlds. This involves helping students to “think computationally,” write code, and/or gather and analyze data. This also (increasingly) involves helping them consider the broader social and political impacts of these technologies and methods. In this talk, Dr. Sarah Van Wart will describe a few different approaches that she has taken – citizen science, civic advocacy, and app prototyping – to help young people engage with problems that are at the same time technical, social, and political. Dr. Van Wart will also share resources that have been helpful as she has tried to figure out how to balance these themes in her own teaching practice.

Induction Highlights

By now, most of you have heard the news that I’ll soon be transitioning out of my role as Induction Coordinator for the TR@TC program.

The past (almost) four years have been some of the most rewarding of my career, and I offer my sincerest gratitude to all those who have mentored, encouraged, challenged, and supported me as I endeavored to contribute to TR@TC’s mission to develop a network of compassionate teachers who are committed to educational equity and social justice.

Today, as I prepare to embark on the next phase of my career, my heart is full of hope and excitement, not just for the work I am about to engage in, but for the future of this program. In just a few months, it will be 12 years since the very first cohort of TR@TC preservice teachers answered the call to teach in NYC public schools, and despite an unusually high turnover in the teacher workforce, our alumni retention rate for classroom teachers remains in the high 80s, while our overall retention rate in education-related fields surpasses that number!

Our impact continues to grow exponentially, with several TR@TC alumni taking a variety of teacher development and leadership roles, including mentoring and research. I personally believe that we now have a unique opportunity to work together to develop more clusters of TR@TC teachers, school leadership partners, and affiliates who are aligned with the program’s vision and mission to create rich and nurturing learning environments for K-12 students AND their teachers.

So, I leave you with this call to action: Regardless of the nature of your relationship with the program, stay connectedshare about the work you are doing, offer feedback, and ask how you can be a part of the vision. The Induction program was created with the intention of supporting our expanding network, and that can only happen if we continue to stay in touch!

With loving gratitude always,

Julissa

A message to Julissa:

"Julissa - thank you for your time, guidance, patience, and mentorship over these past 3.5 years. Sharing a space with you was a bright spot in my weeks of grad school, which were rough. I feel blessed that TC brought us together, and I mean that. I admire how you are intentional in what you do and how you spend your time, and it inspires me. I hope this next chapter of your life is a great one!" - Karina Castellanos, TR@TC staff

"Smile and keep perseverance!! You can always do it."- Marco Alba, TR@TC staff
