Less than 60 days till year 2020 and we are so excited about what's in store!
As we recently shared, TR@TC was awarded the 2019 TQP grant, which will enable us to continue preparing teachers to enter NYC classrooms for another 5 years!!
2020 will also mark the 10 year anniversary of the Teaching Residents program at Teachers College, and we thank you for your support as we strive to develop a strong network of culturally responsive teachers who...
- are dedicated to providing opportunities of rich, authentic and meaningful learning for self and students
- intentionally earn and foster positive and productive relationships with the communities of colleagues, students, families, friends, and neighbors that they have joined
- have the wisdom and courage to lead through listening and humility needed to acknowledge and act on ideas and expertise that can be found in the community
- develop attitudes of innovative problem solving, even in times of struggle and frustration

With our substantial financial supports and thoughtful mentors, you can earn a Masters degree and teaching certification in TESOL, special education, science, and/or math in 18 months. English Language Arts and Social Studies
- GirlsWriteNow - Girls Write Now mentors underserved young women to find their voices through the power of writing and community.
Science
- Edible School Yard - Edible Schoolyard NYC teaches teachers how to incorporate gardening and cooking lessons and activities into the curriculum.
Math
- Museum of Mathematics - The museum of mathematics is located on 26th street and 5th Ave in lower Manhattan. Exhibits in the museum explore a range of mathematical concepts, and provide opportunities for students to apply these concepts to their lives. You may also be interested in exploring the museum's blog, which is posted every Monday.
The Arts
- The Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts - LCI focuses on providing opportunities for students and teachers to incorporate the practice of imaginative learning in their classrooms. Teaching artists partner with classroom teachers to design curriculum that is centered around imagination and the arts and also tied to curricular standards for any subject area.

In her 2015 article, Equality Is Not Enough: What the Classroom Has Taught Me About Justice, Amy Sun discussed the difference between equity and equality, highlighting that “treating everyone exactly the same actually is not fair. What equal treatment does is to erase our differences and promote privilege.”
As we work towards providing culturally responsive learning experiences for our students, it is important to remember that equity is about being responsive to the needs of each individual student. This work is best done in community, as it is the collective who can best achieve equity in education.
Several school leaders have reached out to inquire about resources to help enact equity-based principles in their schools and we are eager to support in this endeavor. In the following we have highlighted a variety of free and low-cost resources for your consideration.

READY FOR TENURE
Teachers begin working on probation and are generally eligible for tenure at the end of their fourth year. Tenure isn’t automatically granted at the end of your probationary period. To be granted tenure, you must:
- Be on track to complete all your state certification and city licensing requirements;
- file an application and receive professional certification;
- have a record of acceptable service during your probationary period; and
- be recommended for tenure by your principal.
- Your tenure becomes permanent only after you complete all your certification requirements. Visit UFT.org and sign up for a Tenure PD. Stay on track!

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
Are you ready to apply for your Professional Certification?
You have five years from the date of your initial teaching certificate to fulfill the requirements for your professional certificate. You should make sure you’re keeping track of your completed requirements by logging into your online TEACH account at the State Education Department website. Do not wait until your fifth year to apply for your professional certificate!
To get your professional certificate, you’ll need to show that you’ve completed the following requirements:
- A master’s degree;
- 12 graduate credits in the certificate area’s content core or a related field (if your master’s degree is pedagogical, this 12-credit requirement is already met by the program);
- Three years of full-time teaching experience;
- One year of mentored experience; and
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Wellness Series Continues! This fall, we have partnered with Success in Motion to offer a series of FREE Wellness Workshops! Each session will be two hours long and will include a low-impact Cardio component, followed by combination Yoga and Meditation. In December, we'll also be hosting an Aromatherapy Gift Workshop! Join us for an hour OR two!
Please be sure to RSVP to the session of your choice. Light refreshments will be provided. All you need to bring is a smile and comfortable clothing! All are welcome! |

Do you use affirmations in your daily life? Affirmations are positive and intentional statements that help us overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. They help us to visualize and believe in what we want to see in our lives. If you want strong arms, you head to the gym and lift weights over and over. Affirmations do the same thing, only for our minds and perspectives. Repeating positive statements help to reprogram our though patterns so that, over time, we begin to think, and act, in a new (and more positive) way.
Affirmations for Creating a Great Morning I wake up energized and excited. I am feeling healthy and strong. I start a new chapter today. I handle any challenges that arise. I greet everyone with ease today. I trust my decisions today. I am happy with my life. I love myself.
