| A message from TR@TC...
For most educators, October marks the month in which their students begin to settle into the routines of the classroom. Schedules have been finalized, procedures for entering and leaving the classroom have been internalized (we hope), norms have been collectively established, and teachers are shifting their focus to the content instruction that is facilitated through intentional classroom management.
More experienced educators may be in the midst of analyzing or administering baseline assessments, that will guide their instruction; some might be in the process of collaborating on that magical interdisciplinary unit they've been dreaming about since their first year of teaching!
Wherever October finds you, we hope that you're feeling energized and inspired by the work you do, and the students who will be in your care this year. Know that we are here to support, sustain, and celebrate you every step of the way.

Supporting Latino SIFE Students
Workshop Facilitated by Institute of Latin American Studies

The Fulbright Leaders for Global Schools Program will send cohorts of K–12 school and district administrators to Finland and Singapore for an intensive program (approximately 10 days in length) to learn about best educational practices to enhance student learning and develop 21st century skills. In Spring 2020, 10 administrators will have the opportunity to travel to Finland, and 5 administrators will have the opportunity to travel to Singapore. A second cohort to Singapore will be selected for travel in Spring 2021. Click here for more information.

| READY FOR TENURE Obtaining tenure is an important milestone. Having tenure means you can’t be terminated without due process and you’re entitled to a hearing if the Department of Education takes disciplinary action.
Teachers begin working on probation and are generally eligible for tenure at the end of their fourth year. Tenure isn’t automatically granted at the end of your probationary period. To be granted tenure, you must: - Be on track to complete all your state certification and city licensing requirements;
- file an application and receive professional certification;
- have a record of acceptable service during your probationary period; and
- be recommended for tenure by your principal.
Your tenure becomes permanent only after you complete all your certification requirements. Visit UFT.org and sign up for a Tenure PD. Stay on track!

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION
Are you ready to apply for your Professional Certification?
You have five years from the date of your initial teaching certificate to fulfill the requirements for your professional certificate. You should make sure you’re keeping track of your completed requirements by logging into your online TEACH account at the State Education Department website. Do not wait until your fifth year to apply for your professional certificate!
To get your professional certificate, you’ll need to show that you’ve completed the following requirements:
- A master’s degree;
- 12 graduate credits in the certificate area’s content core or a related field (if your master’s degree is pedagogical, this 12-credit requirement is already met by the program);
- Three years of full-time teaching experience;
- One year of mentored experience; and
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

| NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFICATION Considering Pursuing National Board Certification?
After completing your 3rd year of teaching, you may want to apply for this advanced ,and prestigious, certification. Devon Shaw, a TR@TC Alumnus, will be leading a National Board Certification workshop, in the Fall. Email him at shaw.dts@gmail.com if you'd like to be a part of it!

| Self Care and Sustainability |
|
Wellness Series Continues! In addition to our regularly scheduled programming, this fall, we have partnered with Success in Motion to offer a series of FREE Wellness Workshops! Each session will be two hours long and will include a low-impact Cardio component, followed by combination Yoga and Meditation. In December, we'll also be hosting an Aromatherapy Gift Workshop! Join us for an hour OR two!
Please be sure to RSVP to the session of your choice. Light refreshments will be provided. All you need to bring is a smile and comfortable clothing! All are welcome! |

I Was Running Myself Into the Ground: My Self-Care Story

“...I experienced major burn out my 4th year teaching. Tears and rants about how much I hated teaching were regular occurrences for my, then, boyfriend. Emotionally, I was a wreck most days—almost always angry and annoyed. The only things that kept me composed each day were the kindest grade level partner, an empathetic assistant principal, and the threat of losing guaranteed money...like most of the people in my cohort, I graduated college fully committed to the belief that teaching would be extremely challenging and that in order to be successful, I would need to work as much and as “hard” as possible...My first year, I spent working non-stop. Most days, I stayed in my classroom until 6 pm only to arrive home and continue working until late into the night. I spent hours creating materials and attempting to make every lesson in every subject area as dynamic as possible. If it didn’t involve an original song, dance, or collaborative activity, it wasn’t good enough. Use the book? Only if I could adapt and make it more high energy and engaging...Work. Work. More Work. Fighting windmills in attempts to “get ahead” of the demands that were endless planning and grading. Still spending every spare second to make every lesson incredible and every learning opportunity electric, I was unknowingly, speeding towards burnout...”
