Induction and Beyond
December-January I Holiday Edition Newsletter
 A message from TR@TC...

In education, December is usually a time of thoughtful reflection, while January is the time to reset and implement the new. As you enter this time of introspection and action, we encourage you to step back and give thought to the rituals and routines that define your classroom spaces.

In Culturally Responsive Teaching and The Brain, Zaretta Hammond (2015) defines routines as a method of classroom management, while rituals help to "reinforce [the] inspiration, affirmation, and validation [of your] students." Together, these two contribute to classroom culture. Consider what is working well, what needs to change, and how you will invite students to be a part of this process, in January.

Wishing you a joyous end to 2019 and an even greater 2020!

The TR@TC Team

Where The Books Are...
Here are a few of the books we are reading (or re-reading) this month...
Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown
Online Description: "Inspired by Octavia Butler's explorations of our human relationship to change, Emergent Strategy is radical self-help, society-help, and planet-help designed to shape the futures we want to live. Change is constant. The world is in a continual state of flux. It is a stream of ever-mutating, emergent patterns. Rather than steel ourselves against such change, this book invites us to feel, map, assess, and learn from the swirling patterns around us in order to better understand and influence them as they happen. This is a resolutely materialist “spirituality” based equally on science and science fiction, a visionary incantation to transform that which ultimately transforms us."
Pleasure Activism: The Politics of Feeling Good (Emergent Strategy)
Online Description: "How do we make social justice the most pleasurable human experience? How can we awaken within ourselves desires that make it impossible to settle for anything less than a fulfilling life? Author and editor adrienne maree brown finds the answer in something she calls “pleasure activism,” a politics of healing and happiness that explodes the dour myth that changing the world is just another form of work. Drawing on the black feminist tradition, she challenges us to rethink the ground rules of activism..."
Farming While Black by Leah
Online Description: "...Farming While Black organizes and expands upon the curriculum of the BLFI to provide readers with a concise guide to all aspects of small-scale farming, from business planning to preserving the harvest. Throughout the chapters Penniman uplifts the wisdom of the African diasporic farmers and activists whose work informs the techniques described―from whole farm planning, soil fertility, seed selection, and agroecology, to using whole foods in culturally appropriate recipes, sharing stories of ancestors, and tools for healing from the trauma associated with slavery and economic exploitation on the land. Woven throughout the book is the story of Soul Fire Farm, a national leader in the food justice movement."
Umi and Uma: The Story of Two Mommies and a Baby

Online Description: "The perfect children's book for any household looking to add diverse children's books to their library, Umi and Uma is the story of two mommies and a baby. Written by two real moms raising a new baby, this story within a story explains to baby Abigail how her two mommies decided to start a family in the far away land of Astrin."
