‘But when his brothers saw that their father loved Joseph more than them, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.’ Genesis 37:4 (NRSV)Joseph’s life was pretty good: he was his father’s favourite son. He was blessed by God with a secure home, a stable job and occasional dreams that spoke of his greatness. However, there was an undercurrent of jealousy amongst Joseph’s brothers. The upshot of their hatred was that they threw their brother into a pit and later sold him to a caravan of Ishmaelites. Joseph’s life had hit the wall and all that was true for him before, no longer held. When our life hits the wall, we are forced to re-evaluate where our identity and security lie. Our jobs, our health and who or what we know, no longer count. When our world falls apart, we are forced to re-evaluate our image of God. Who is this God who says He loves us, but allows our little world, to crumble? And when our lives are in turmoil, we must face our weaknesses and limitations. We can no longer depend upon ourselves anymore. This is a dark, unknowing place that reeks of God's presence. We may feel lonely, abandoned, confused and lost. But we are right where God wants us to be. God is in the midst of the darkness and uncertainty and it can be a healing, transforming place. God hasn't abandoned us after all. He is with us, as He was with Joseph. When life hits the wall, let's embrace our pain, acknowledge our hurts and learn to let God hold us there. Believe that God is making good all that concerns us.
