How to Take Thoughts Captive to The Obedience of Christ
Michael Edwards

There is an important difference in what is normally preached and what the Word states when it comes to taking thoughts captive. Traditionally it is taught that Christians are to take every thought captive to obey Christ.

The truth is, when the Greek is read, the verse in question is not telling us to make our thoughts obey Christ, it is telling us to captivate our thoughts and minds with Jesus obedience, His finished work on the cross, His obedience and His righteousness that makes us righteous in Him. This should always be our focus, the song on our hearts and minds. When our minds are captivated by something, they are focused on that topic all of the time. This is the armor of God and how we stop the attacks of the enemy cold.

Let me back this up with scripture. Some translations say to take every thought captive to obey Christ, but they are in error when the Greek is read.

A version that is in error:

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Cor 10:5 NIV

A version that has it correct:

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Cor 10:5 NAS

Can you see the difference? It is enormous.

1) The incorrect translation tells us to take every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2) The correct translations tell us to take thoughts captive to the Jesus obedience on the cross that finished the work for us.

The correct translation is talking about Jesus obedience. The incorrect and most preached is talking about our obedience.

Jesus poured out His blood for the New Covenant of grace and truth, replacing the Old Covenant letter of the law of Moses. Believers are exclusively under the New Covenant, the last will and testament of Jesus that began after the cross.

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. Luke 22:20

Recent Amazon Review:

"For anyone on the fence, backsliding, or doubtful this book clarifies misunderstandings, perceived contradictions, and outright lies. I was led to read this book at a time when I thought I was over Jesus; but truth defeats lies every time and never forsakes the believer." 2-18-17
