The deepest yearnings of our hearts are to be known and loved. We’re comforted in knowing He first loved us. (1 John 4:19) We’re both humbled and grateful He first chose us. (John 15:16) It seems our life’s journey is spent answering the question as to why God loved and chose us first.
We can know ourselves and God’s purpose and plan for our lives through His Word. As we read, its Living Essence, the Holy Spirit, reads us, bringing a personalized revelation. Don’t submit to tea leaves and tarot cards. Submit to the living Word of God to know thyself.
God’s Word actively discerns. Several meanings/synonyms of discern are to behold, grasp, examine, and identify, words showing the scope of the Word’s actions toward us. Behold, frequently used in scripture, means to see or observe. But from its Hebrew derivation, it’s stronger than see; it means pay special attention to; this is important. As you read the Word, the Holy Spirit beholds you. He pays special attention, for you are important to the Lord. Next, the Spirit intends to grasp you, the beloved of God, indicating a grip or hold. He wants your attention now, so you may listen and learn.
If you will linger with the Word, the Spirit will next examine you; this function is two-fold: to analyze and scrutinize, then to interrogate or question. You’ll be given much to ponder and answer for yourself. You can grow in wisdom and knowledge and receive God’s guidance. Lastly, to discern is to identify, to establish the identity of, to show to be the very person known or claimed. You are known by the Lord and have been claimed as His very own. The Word will reveal your identity in Christ.
Read the Word to know thyself; let it behold, grasp, examine, and identify you, dear child of God.
