Happy to Offer

2012 was a highly successful vintage in the Cote de Beaune, despite the climatic problems throughout the summer. Power and precision mark the wines, with particularly low yields leading to near-ideal levels of concentration. Bright acidity completes the profile for both the red and white wines, giving us an immensely pleasurable array of wines across the region.

Under the skilled and thoughtful hand of a grower like Jean-Marc Morey, the concentration of the vintage is captured in a dense but restrained style. Morey, ever careful not to let the fruit get the better of the acid and mineral elements of the wine, jealously protects the full expression of the terroir of his numerous vineyard sites, a ravishing triumph in 2012.

A little down the road, Jean-Marc Pillot finds himself at home in a vintage with the intensity of 2012 and the perfumed aromatics of his wines convey his enthusiasm for these wines. The Premier Crus are quite generous in their youth, but have the raw material to evolve gracefully for many years while again putting in fine relief the nuances of Chassagne’s terroir. In addition to the broad array of 1er Crus available from Pillot, we are pleased to offer a selection of wines from the 2013 vintage and a terrific 2011!

2012 Jean-Marc Morey Beaune Blanc 1er Cru
“Greves”
$630 case
After a five vintage hiatus, the white wine out of the 1er Cru ‘Greves’ vineyard marks its return to the U.S. market. While the domaine has long held Pinot Noir vines in this vineyard, in the mid-1990s some of the vines were grafted to Chardonnay to produce this rare and generous white. Rich, high-toned fruit, held in check by a vein of mineral and tension.
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Chaumées”
$924 case
The "Chaumées" vineyard is situated on a gentle slope that is in the northwest corner of Chassagne on the border with Saint Aubin. As is common with the 1er Crus in this section of Chassagne, the “Chaumées” from Jean-Marc Morey is an elegant, floral wine that is more welcoming in the early stages of its development than some of its brethren from other parts of Chassagne. Morey owns .37 hectare in “Chaumées”, annual production is about 2700 bottles. The vines were planted both in 1958 with a second parcel being replanted in 1989.
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Chenevottes”
$924 case
The "Chenevottes" vineyard is in the northernmost sector of Chassagne, bordering on Puligny. As such it qualifies as the most elegant wine of this group. Morey owns .22 hectare in “Chenevottes”. The vines therein were planted in 1980 and another part in 1991.
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Champs Gains”
$924 case
Jean-Marc Morey has a significant holding in « Champs Gains » of a bit more than one hectare. Three-quarters of a hectare is planted to Chardonnay to produce his white from the vineyard situated in the heart of the appellation. The vines were planted in 1967, some in 1971 and the most recent in 2009. Morey’s “Champs Gains” is a full-bodied, rich wine with lots of structure.
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Caillerets”
$996 case
Magnums $1092 case
Morey exploits nearly three-quarters of a hectare of vineyards in this most prestigious « cru » of Chassagne. The Morey vines were planted at four different times: 1951, 1965, 1973 and 1983. The vines sit on a plateau of deep clay under a stony limestone and are on a steep slope providing excellent drainage. At this point it is surely a cliché but it is nevertheless true that well-rendered “Caillerets” expresses the essence of this appellation: power and precision, elegance and depth. Here is one of our finest white Burgundies!
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Beaune Rouge 1er Cru
“Greves”
$624 case
A wine of energy and breadth, showing the terroir of Beaune, which is located several kilometres north of Chassagne Montrachet. The Greves vineyard is in a prime position, mid- slope at the northern end of the appellation, and recognized as one of the top Premier Crus of the village.
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Chassagne Montrachet Rouge 1er Cru
“Champs Gains”
$588 case
With roughly a quarter of the one-hectare parcel planted to Pinot Noir, not much wine comes out of this vineyard for the domaine. Compared to the other reds on offer, this cuvée shows the elegance and elevated acidity of the Chassagne terroir.
2012 Jean-Marc Morey Santenay Rouge 1er Cru
“Grand Clos Rousseau”
$624 case
Magnums $660 case
Perhaps the top red wine in the Morey range, this classic rendition of Santenay is sourced from a half-hectare parcel planted in 1993. An intensely aromatic expression, with notes of truffles, earth, and red fruits. The backbone of grainy, sweet tannins provide a balanced frame.
2013 Jean-Marc Pillot Bourgogne Blanc
“Les Grands Champs”
$294 case
From a parcel on the southeastern end of Chassagne Montrachet, this wine now passes its elevage in stainless steel tank to preserve its freshness. It shares the broad shoulders and dense texture of the wines of Chassagne. Bottled twelve months after the harvest, this wine establishes the baseline for the generous, open style adopted by Jean-Marc for all of his wines.
2013 Jean-Marc Pillot Saint-Romain Blanc
“La Perriere”
$420 case
A small cuvee vinified in steel, which helps to retain all of the earthy minerality of the appellation. A small portion is then aged in barrel, providing a pleasant counter-point to the lively acidity that is typical of St Romain.
2013 Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne Montrachet
“Chaumes”
$672 case
This village-level wine is produced from grapes grown in a parcel just east and beneath the 1er Cru site of Morgeot. The vines were planted in 1959; the parcel is in excess of two hectares in size. From this elite position in the southern tier of the village, the wine is consistently round and full-bodied, but it shows a bright acidity in the finish, giving it length and breed.
2011 Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“La Maltroie”
$696 case
This tiny parcel of 0.16 hectares is a recent addition to the Pillot domaine. This lieu-dit is just south of the village and next to Champs Gains. The vines were planted in 1951 and these old vines give a formidable level of concentration to this classic version of Chassagne. Note this is the lone Premier Cru from the 2011 vintage for this release.
2012 Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Macherelles”
$696 case
A small part of Pillot’s 0.37 ha plot in Macherelles was planted to Chardonnay in 1949, and we are fortunate to once again have access to this wine. Whites from Macherelles typically show notes of salinity with a hint of bitter herbs. Slightly leaner than some of its neighbors, the precision and crystalline quality of the texture make this a welcome addition to the lineup.
2012 Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Chenevottes”
$792 case
This cuvée is from the northernmost holdings of the domaine in Chassagne as it fronts onto the border with Saint Aubin and Puligny. It is here that Pillot reveals the more elegant side of Chassagne. A small holding (0.29 hectares, vines planted in 1950) that yields a wine that is generous and silky with more citrus notes than the cuvées from the southern edge of Chassagne. A barrel, or 300 bottles, is allocated for the USA.
2012 Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru
“Les Vergers”
$792 case
Sourced from a half-hectare parcel planted in 1949, the Vergers is in the northern tier of Chassagne on a substantial slope which lends this wine a considerable degree of finesse. It is rather open in its youth, more floral than its companion wines and one of the most consistently satisfying wines of the domaine.
2013 Jean-Marc Pillot Bourgogne Rouge
“Les Grandes Terres”
$288 case
This little red is a favorite of ours for its rustic, wild berry fruit and ebullient palate presence. The vineyard is located south of Chassagne in the town of Remigny. Some of the vines are quite old, approaching the 60-year mark.
