Subject: 2013 Red and White Burgundy from Chassagne Montrachet

Son of the late Marc Morey, Michel Morey, and his wife, Fabienne (from the Pillot clan), began the Morey-Coffinet Domaine in the late 1970s with a dowry of vineyards bestowed on them by two families with extensive history in the region. With a stable foundation of Premier Crus from the southeast-facing hillside, the whites speak to the very essence of Chassagne, with fragrant aromas framed by powerful minerality. The reds capture the roasted, muscular aromas of Chassagne terroir and display silky texture and balance. Michel’s son, Thibault, joined the business in the late 1990s, and the domaine’s wines have since reached new heights, pushing the quality of the domaine to a whole different level with his expressive, powerful, wonderfully hedonistic wines.

2013 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
$1560 6pack

Don’t Miss. Here too the exceptionally fresh nose speaks of honeysuckle though the fruit profile changes to ripe peach and apricot along with discreet citrus nuances. There is a highly appealing sense of energy to the terrifically intense and overtly powerful big-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in a cool, focused and admirably long finish. This is beautifully balanced and should amply reward extended cellaring.”

2013 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Puligny-Montrachet "Les Pucelles" Premier Cru
$660 6pack

Sweet spot Outstanding. There is a hint of matchstick character present on the otherwise exceptionally fresh and elegant aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine tea and white fleshed fruit. The cool, pure and energetic medium-bodied flavors possess the most refinement of any wine in the range and the purity of expression displayed by the lingering and faultless well-balanced finish is dazzling. This is pure class and note that while it will age well it would also be a reasonable candidate for drinking after only 5 years or so.”

2013 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc Blanchots-Dessus Premier Cru
$588 6pack
92 Points Burghound
Sweet spot Outstanding. Here too a subtle touch of wood sets off the more floral-inflected nose that includes notes of pear, apple and white peach. The powerful, focused and still very tight broad-shouldered flavors exude plenty of minerality while coating the palate with abundant dry extract on the wonderfully long, balanced and intense finish.”

2013 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc Les Caillerets Premier Cru
$456 6pack
91 Points Burghound
Outstanding. A more elegant and complex nose is composed of cool but ripe white and yellow fruit aromas that are nuanced by floral and spice hints. The generously proportioned yet reasonably well-detailed middle weight flavors possess a really lovely mouth feel that continues into the saline, clean and markedly dry but only mildly austere finish. This is beautifully well-balanced and should reward 6 to 8 years of cellar time yet be approachable early on.”

2013 Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot Premier Cru
$324 6pack
91 Points Burghound
Outstanding top value. This is reserved to the point of being all but mute though aggressive swirling finally pries loose discreet notes of pepper, sauvage and dark berry fruit scents. There is excellent density to the concentrated medium weight flavors as the old vine sap definitely adds a sense of volume, particularly on the robust, serious and rustic finish that delivers excellent depth and length. Thanks to the abundant sap this could be drunk now with enjoyment though I would suggest waiting for more complexity to develop.”
