Subject: Is a reintroduction necessary?

I'm back, here's what to expect, and here's what to know.

Success Without Sacrifice

N E W S L E T T E R

Because real success leaves space for real life.

When I was a teenager, a girl I didn’t recognize called me by my name. She was able to tell me things she could only know if I’d told her.

It was unnerving (and embarrassing) because I had no clue who she was.

I’ve since made it a point to try to remember people (I still have trouble with names, but rarely forget faces or stories).

I’ve been taking a break for the past month. Hopefully, you haven’t pulled a “Heather” and forgotten who I am or why you’re receiving this newsletter.

But since I’m back, a reintroduction is in order (both as a reminder and also to let you know what to expect).

SUCCESS WITHOUT SACRIFICE

What to expect moving forward.

This newsletter has always been, and will remain, focused on helping you create real success through my 5 core pillars: mindset, leadership, business development, practice management, and balance.

For the past few years, I’ve mostly sent quick tips and tools your way (with where to go for a deeper dive, usually to my podcast).

Through my recent survey, I've learned that many of you would like me to go deeper (at least occasionally) within the newsletter itself.

Yet I get that many of you like what I've been doing, too.

I also want to ensure signing up to receive my weekly email is a value-add (e.g., you get value that I haven't yet provided anywhere else).

Given all of this, and knowing I can't please everyone perfectly, here is what to expect moving forward.

You'll still receive just one weekly email. You'll get two deep dives per month with the rest being quick-win tips, tools, and strategies.

When relevant, all emails will include additional resources for going deeper (a mix of PDF's, blog articles, and podcast episodes). Most resources will be mine, but some won’t.

Today we get started with a deeper dive (on a topic that’s perfect for my reintroduction)...

LET'S TALK ALIGNMENT

Why you don't want (or need) "balance".

Balance is that thing that most lawyers (heck, pretty much all high-achievers) talk about yet never quite seem to get.

The problem? It doesn't exist. Not like we tend to think of it.

And honestly, you don't want (nor do you need) balance.

What do you want (and need) that you can actually have?

Alignment.

Let's look at what that means.

YOUR INNER GAME

Know Thyself

This is about understanding yourself.

  • Your values.

  • Your needs.

  • Your strengths.

  • What you actually want (and why).

So that you don’t get caught up in what other people want from you (or for you).

The most important piece of this? Your personal values.

Personal values are those principles you hold dear (the ones you live by). When aligned with them, they give meaning and purpose to life.

Even if you don’t realize it, they drive both your decision-making and behavior.

You likely have a general idea of your core values. But if you’re like most people, you’ve never defined them. Specifically. So...

  • What words best describe your core personal values?

  • How do you define what they mean (specifically)?

For help, use my Values Assessment >>> here.

After considering your values, it’s time to identify your strengths. Because we often confuse strengths with skills.

Strengths aren't the same thing as skills; they are attributes that other people naturally come to you for. That bring meaning (and you enjoy).

To get clarity around your strengths, I recommend CliftonStrengths Assessment (found here).

I am not affiliated with CliftonStrengths, but do utilize it (and believe it's a great way to learn more about your strengths and how to use them).

ALIGN WITH AND TO

Your goals, priorities & circumstances.

Feeling "balanced" is about aligning your priorities, goals, and decisions to the things above (strengths, needs, and values). This is why you must know yourself.

Goals should align with your values, and goal achievement strategies should leverage your strengths. Everything should line up with what matters most to you.

But beware! You must do this based on real life.

That means taking into account current circumstances and the season of life you’re in, while recognizing that tradeoffs must be made.

The real balancing act is two-fold: (1) accepting that tradeoffs are a necessity (mindset) and (2) making intentional tradeoffs.

Got questions about any of this, Friend?

Hit reply. Although I cannot promise how quickly I’ll get back to you, I do read and reply to every email.

XO,

Heather

P.S. To take what we're talking about today even deeper, I recommend the following podcast episodes:

The podcast is back with all news episodes. This week is all about how to use LinkedIn for networking (seriously, you'll be amazed).
