I have a bone to pick with many of my fellow coaches (and society as a whole). Because of all the talk around needing to make life/work more "seamless" (and promise for more "ease").
We are taught to believe that: Friction means something is wrong. When things feel SO hard, it means you're on the wrong track. Running against numerous roadblocks means you've made a "bad" decision.
And so, we optimize to eliminate friction and try to design our lives to "flow" (like, all the time).
Which is exhausting and disheartening. Because guess what? That's not how life works (or how human beings work).
Difficulty doesn't mean you chose wrong; Smooth doesn't mean you've figured it out.
Most of life exists in the middle: I'm not saying you should just sit and "take it". What I am saying is that the goal isn't to avoid friction, messiness, or hard.
Because when avoiding friction becomes the goal, we don’t just oversimplify messy human situations, but turn away from those things that make life meaningful.
Meaning comes from doing despite discomfort (and overcoming the messy difficulties of life). And we learn from discomfort (often, the BEST learning comes when we are most uncomfortable).
When we aim to avoid the pain and discomfort, we lose tolerance for it. Which is how you end up lacking resilience (that you need because... life!). And believing that something is always wrong.
With others. With the world. With yourself. |
