A lawyer is up for partnership at the end of this year. Wanting to keep his hours up, be a team player, and please everyone, he says “yes” to just about everything:
The overflow work from other practice groups ("You're the only one who can do it!").
The administrative items no one else in his group will take on.
Every BD event, lunch, and/or meeting he's asked to attend.
Despite being so exhausted he can barely hold his head up, he tells himself, "Just one more year. Get through this, make partner, and make changes after."
Until a senior partner calls out sloppy work product, a deadline slips (for one of his best clients), and questions from senior leadership (during a firm presentation) reveal he didn't adequately prepare.
[Yes, within just one week.]
Suddenly, the things that were supposed to get him to partnership are putting him at risk of not making it.
This is what "say yes to everything" looks like, Friend.
And sadly, it's a common phenomenon. We lawyers love to gut through and push harder... Until we can't.
The good news is that it's not necessary. You don't have to sacrifice your health, your personal relationships, or your sanity to get promoted to partner.
Truly.
If this sounds familiar, take it as a sign to find another way.
Not sure how to figure out that other way?
Reach out to someone for help (there are plenty of us who can help). And check out the podcasts listed below (where you'll learn from and be inspired by fellow practicing lawyers who prove there's a better way).
XO,
Heather
P.S. Caveat to the above message:
Yes, you can do what I’m saying above, but not necessarily anywhere/everywhere. Some managers and leaders are unreasonable. Some workplaces are truly toxic.
But don’t assume without an honest analysis.
